Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tat prastaaraH) The extension of this body is that — (sapta-lokaaH) there are seven “Praanah” = organs of receiving knowledge. (tatra) There, (aviicheH prabhriti) starting from ‘aviichi’ (= feet) (meru-priShTham yaavat) up to the ‘Meru’ (= start of the spinal cord) (iti eShaH) this is the (bhuuH-lokaH) Bhu-loka = base of the body. (meru-priShThaat aarabhya) Beginning from the base of ‘Meru’ = spinal cord (aadhruvaat) up to the level of ‘Dhruva’, (graha-nakShatra-taaraa-vichitraH) adorned by the graha, nakshatra, and taaraa i.e., organs of action and sensation = means of knowledge is (antarikSha-lokaH) the center of the body.
(tataH paraH) Beyond this (svaH-lokaH) Sva-loka (pa~ncha-vidhaH) is of five types. There starting from Bhuu-loka (tritiiyaH lokaH) the third plane is (maahendraH) Maahendra Loka; (chaturthaH) fourth is (mahaH-lokaH) Maha-loka (praajaapatyaH) of the creator. (trividhaH braahmaH) There are three types of planes of Brahma = knower of Vedas — (tadyathaa) that are (jana-lokaH tapo-lokaH satya-lokaH iti) Jana-loka, Tapa-loka and Satya-loka. (It must be understood that the first two planes - Bhuu-loka and Antariksha-loka are the states of the body; and planes from Maha-loka to Satya-loka are the states of mind.)
(iti sa.ngraha-shlokaH) This is said so, in an old scripture —
(braahmaH tribhuumikaH lokaH) Brahma-loka is having three stages, (tataH praajaapatyaH mahaan) creator has Maha-loka, (cha) and (maahendraH svaH iti uktaH) Sva-loka said to be of Maahendra, (divi taaraa) starry region has organs and (bhuvi prajaaH) normal persons / living beings are on the base.
(tatra) Out of different stages (aviicheH) beginning from aviichi, (upari upari niviShTaaH) one is placed above the other, (ShaN-mahaa-naraka-bhuumayaH) there are six great hells namely (mahaakaala-ambariiSha-raurava-mahaaraurava-kaalasuutra-andha-taamisraaH) the Mahaakaala, the AmbariiSha, the Raurava, the Mahaaraurava, the Kaalasuutra, the Andhataamishraa (ghana-salil-anala-anila-aakaasha-tamaH pratiShThaa) in which there are excesses of ghana = solid, salil = water, anala = fire, anila = air, aakaasha = ether, and tama = darkness respectively. (These are in the form of various bodies of animals, worms, birds, trees, etc.) (yatra) Where (praaniNah) the living beings = souls (jaayante) take birth, (diirgha-kaalam kaShTam aayuH aakShipya) along with the painful long life (sva-karma-upaarjita-duHkha-vedanaaH) to experience the pains which are the fruits of their own acts. (tataH)Then (sapta paataalaani) are seven Paataala (= lower organs = parts of the body i.e., stomach, two legs, two hands, penis and anus) namely (mahaatala-rasaatala-atala-sutala-vitala-talaatala-paataala-aakhyaani) Mahaatala, Rasaatala, Atala, Sutala, Vitala, Talaatal, Paataala. (aShTamii) The eighth (iyam) is this (bhuumiH) earth (sapta-dviipaa) having seven parts, and (vasumatii) is known as Vasumatii (= base for the life of living beings). (yasyaaH madhye) In the middle of thereof (kaa~nchanaH) is a golden (sumeruH parvataraajaH) mountain called Sumeru (= the main bone spinal cord in the body.) (tasya) Its (shri~NgaaNi) peaks are (raajata-vaiduurya-sphatika-hema-maNimayaani) of silver, coral, crystal, gold, and pearl colors. (tatra) There (nabhasaH dakShiNaH bhaagaH) the southern part of the space, (vaiduurya-prabha-anuraagaat) on account of the shine of emerald, (niilotpala-patra-shyaamaH) is blue like the leaf of blue lotus; (puurvaH) the eastern region (shvetaH) is white; (pashchimaH) the western region (svachchhaH) is clear; and (uttaraH) the northern region (kuraNDakaabhaH) is yellow.
(cha) And (dakShiNa-paashrve) in the right side (asya) of the Meru (= spinal cord) (jambuuH) is Jambu, (yataH) on account of which (ayam) this (jambuu-dviipaH) is called as Jambu-dviipa. (suurya-prachaaraat) By motion to Sun (tasya) by Meru (raatrin-divam) night and day (langanam iva varttate) take their round of existence.
(tasya udiichiinaaH) On the northern side of Meru (trayaH parvataaH) three mountains (niila-shveta-shri~Ngavanta) of blue and white peaks exist (dvi-sahasraa-yaamaaH) with 2000 two thousand joints each. (tadantareShu) In between three mountains (triini varShaaNi) there are three places (ramaNakam hiraNmayam uttaraaH kuravaH) namely Ramanak, Hiranmyama, and Uttar-kuru (nava-nava-yojana-sahasraaNi iti) with the 9000 nine thousand joints each. (dakShiNataH) In the southern part (niShadha-hemakuuTa-himashailaa) mountains namely Nishadha, and Hemakuta (dvi-sahasraa-yaamaaH) with 2000 two thousand joints each. (tadantareShu) In between these, (treeni varShaaNi) three places (hari-varSham kimpuruSham bhaaratam) namely HarivarSha, KimpuruSha, and Bhaarat exist (nava-nava-yojana-sahasraaNi iti) with the 9000 nine thousand joints each. (praachiinaaH) In the eastern part (sumeroH) of the spinal cord, there is (bhadrashvaH) place namely Bhadrashva (maalyavatsiimaanaH) with the boundary of Maalyavat. (pratiichiinaaH) In the western part (ketumaalaaH) there is Ketumaalaa (gandha-maadana-siimaanaH) with the boundary of Gandhamaadana, and (madhye) in the center (ilaavritam varSham) there is a place namely Ilavarit.
(tat etat) That this (yojana-shata-sahasram) Jambu with the hundred thousand joints (vyuuDham) exists (dishi dishi) in four sides (sumeroH) of Sumeru (tadardhena) with half of its extension.
(sa khalu ayam) And that this (jambuu-dviipaH) Jambudviipa (shata-sahasra-yaamaH) of hundred thousand joints,1 (veShTitaH) is surrounded by (tataH dviguNena) double of its extent (valayaa-kritinaa) rounded (lavaNodadhinaa) salted ocean. (cha) And (tataH) after that, in sequence, (shaaka-kusha-krau~ncha-shaalmala-gomedha-puShkara-dviipaaH) Dveepa namely Shaaka, Kusha, Krauncha, Shaalmala, Gomedha, and PuShkara (dviguNaaH dviguNaaH) exist with double of joint strength of the preceding one, (cha) and further (samudraaH) oceans, (savichitra-shailaavata.nsaah) with the beautiful mountains (sarShapa-raashi-kalpaaH) looking like mustard seeds, (sapta-samudra-pariveShTitaaH) are surrounded by seven oceans (ikShurasa-suraa-sarpih-dadhi-maNda-kShiira-svaaduudakaaH) of taste like sugar-cane, wine, clarified butter, curd, gruel, and milk. All these (lokaaloka-parvata-parivaaraaH) places and mountains are (valayaakritayaH) circular in shape and (pa~nchaashad-yojana-koti-parisa~nkhyaataaH) with the joints of fifty crores. (tat etat sarvam) All these are (supratiShThata-sa.nsthaanam) well arranged and (vyuuDham) exist (aNDamadhye) in the body. (cha) And (aNDam) this body (aNuH avayavaH) is the small part of (pradhaanasya) the Matter, which contains all the elements (products of Matter), (yathaa) as (khadyotaH) Jugunu = shining insect (aakaashe iti) in the sky.
Now explaining the modifications, characteristics, and qualities of persons living in these bodies — (tatra) There (prativasanti) lives (paataale jaladhau eteShu parvateShu) the persons, who are attached to the enjoyment of the material, sense organs in the body, (deva-nikaayaa asura-gandharva-kinara-kimpuruSha-yakSha-raakShasa-bhuuta-preta-pishaacha-apasmaaraka-apsaro-brahma-raakShasa-kuuShmaaNDa-vinaayakaaH) namely devas, asura, gandharva, kinnara, kimpuruSha, yaksha, raakshasa, bhuuta, preta, pishaacha, apasmaaraka, apsara, brahma-raakshasa, kuuShmaanda, and vinaayaka. (sarveShu dviipeShu) In all these places (puNyaatmaanaH deva-manuShyaaH) virtuous persons, intellectuals, and normal persons live.

(te) All these four types of intellectuals (api) also (pratiShThanti) exist (trailokya-madhye) in the bondage of three types of bodies.
(te ete) These are (sapta lokaaH) seven types of states of body and mind, and (sarve) all are (brahma-lokaaH) in the system of birth-death-birth, being fruition of acts for Soul, as governed by GOD, (eva) only. (etat) All this (saakShaat-karaNiiyam) is to be directly cognized (yoginaa) by the Yogi (sa.nyamam kritvaa) by performing Sanyama (suurya-dvaare) in the breath system, (tataH) and he must (anyatra api) practice Sanyama over the other objects also. (evam) In this way, (taavat abhyaset) practice there (yaavat) till (idam sarvam driShTam iti) all this is cognized.
Vedic Commentary in English : Seer Patanjali said that one is able to have knowledge of the body by performing Sanyama over the breath. Since the real meaning of this aphorism is with reference to the body, we have taken "breath" as the meaning of "Surya" and explained the Vyaasa commentary accordingly. In the Vedic scriptures "Surya" is also meant for GOD and breath in addition to the Sun. First of all, we analyze the meaning of "Surya" here —
"Surya" - First of all, we show the "breath" as its meaning, from the testimony of Vedas and BraahamaNa. Swami Dayanand Saraswati described the word "Surya" in the meaning of GOD and breath in the following hymns —
1. - brahmaaNDastho maarttaNDaH shariirastha praaNo vaa. (Rigveda 1.90.8)
It means the "Sun" existing in the solar system and "breath" in the body.
2. - savistaaram praaNam vaa. (Rigveda 1.100.18) - i.e., sun and breath.
3. - yaH suvati aishvaryam dadaati, aishvarya-hetun prerayati sa parmeshvaraH praaNo vaa tasya. (Yajurveda 1.31).
GOD who provides all prosperity, and means of prosperity and "breath".
4. - sakalavidyaadi vyavahaara-praapakatvena varttamaanaH praaNaadi-samuuho vaahugaNaH. (Yajurveda 3.9)
The group of breath system that makes possible all types of knowledge and other activities. In the same hymn, the meaning of the word "Surya" is taken as GOD also.
5. - sarvaantargatasya praaNasya suuryalokasya vaa. (Yajurveda 3.19)
i.e., the sun and breath system which exist in everything.
6. - parmeshvaram savitrimaNDalam praaNam vaa. (Yajurveda 3.54)
i.e., GOD, Sun, and breath.
7. - aadityaH sarvaaNi bhuutaani praNayati tasmaadenam praaNaH iti-aachakShate. (Aitreya Brahmaana 5.31)
Sun is the source of power for all living beings, so, it is also called "Praana" = breath.
8. - praaNaa vaa aadityaaH. (Jaimini upaniShada braahmaNa 4.2.9); and praaNa aadityaH. (Taandayah Braahmana 16.13.2).
i.e., "Praana" = Breath system is the Sun.
9. - aadityau vai praaNaH. (Jaimini upaniShada braahmaNa 4.22.1)
i.e., the Sun is certainly the "praaNa" = breath system. While referring to this testimony Swami Dayanand Saraswati wrote in his book Vedaantidhvaanta nivaarana - The person who is in the sun i.e., in the "breath" ... In this context, he further wrote which is meant that as the sun is taken as a source of power in the external world, so, the "breath" is the source of power in the body.
In the same way, the sun is said as "Breath" power in the upaniShadas —
10. - praaNaa vaavaa.adityaa. (Chhandogya-upaniShada 3.16.5)
i.e., "Breath" power is the Sun.
11. In the second question of Prashana-upaniShada, Seer Pippalaada clarified the position of "breath" in the body, by saying - "aadityo vaa baahya praaNaH" (Prashana-upaniShada 3.9) i.e., Sun is the breath power in the external world. In the same way in his reply to the first question, he said - "aadityo ha vai praaNo ..." (Prashana-upaniShada 1.5) i.e., certainly Sun is the "breath" power.
12. Swami Dayanand Saraswati, in the fifth chapter of his book "Light of Truth", had translated "suryadvaareNa" (Mundaka-upaniShada 1.2.11) as "praaNa-dvaara" i.e., the "path of breath". So, from the "Sanyama of suryadvaarena" in this aphorism, we should accept Sanyama in the "breath".
From the above testimonies, it is very clear that one of the meanings of "Surya" is "breath" which is the most appropriate object of Sanyama while understanding the meaning of this aphorism in the context of the body. It is the only object which is related to the gross and subtle bodies of the Soul. So, by the Sanyama over the breath, Yogi is able to get complete knowledge of the body.
While understanding the meaning of this aphorism it should be kept in mind that - " 'Bhu-loka' and 'bhuva-loka' are the states of the body; and from 'Sva-loka' to 'Satya-loka' are the states of mind."
As in the external world, the Sun controls the existence and positioning of various planets by its gravitational force, so, the "breath" controls the existence of the mind and other organs in the body. (Ref - Chhaandogya-upaniShada 5.1.12, 6.6.1-5; Brihadaaranyka-upaniShada 6.1.13 in this regard.)
Now we try to understand the meaning of various common nouns used in the Vyaasa gloss. In the commentary to this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa had described seven "Loka" and seven "Pataala". By these, various commentators described seven levels of places above the earth and seven levels of places below the earth. These are the seven "Loka" and "Pataala" —
"Loka" — bhuH-loka, antarikSha-loka, svaH-loka, mahaH-loka, jana-loka, tapaH-loka, and satya-loka. Here sva-lokah is known as maahendra-loka; mahaloka is the place of creator; and last three i.e., jana-loka, tapa-loka and satya-loka are the places of GOD.
"Pataala" — these are mahaatala, rasaatala, atala, sutala, vitala, talaatala, and paataala.
Now we have to think— Are there only 7 + 7 = 14 levels of places in the universe? Is there any particular place that can be known as the place of GOD? In fact, there are innumerable places in this universe, which cannot be counted by a human being. In fact, this is an explanation of "Praanas" existing in the body.
In Rigveda 1.22.16 words "prithivyaaH saptadhaamabhiH" are there. While explaining this Swami Dayanand wrote —
"(prithivyaaH) prithiviimaarabhya prakritiparyantaiH (sapta) prithivii-jala-agni-vaayu-viraat-paramaaNu-prakrityaakhyaiH saptabhiH padaarthaiH (dhaamabhiH) dadhati sarvaaNi vastuni yeShu taiH saha." i.e., GOD who is sustainer or upholder of all substances consisting of seven i.e., earth, water, fire, air, Virat, atom, and Matter... From this, it is very clear that it is not a description of seven places of the universe, since it is not possible to divide the universe into seven places above the earth and seven places below the earth (i.e., Pataala).
In this regard Shiv Shankar Sharma, a Vedic scholar, had written in his book on "Vedic Itihas Vimarsha" as - "the description of 14 places = world (= Loka) is the description of "praaNa" only. These are seven "praaNa" - two eyes, two nostrils, two ears, and one tongue are upper places, and two hands, two feet, one organ for urine, one organ for stool, and one stomach are seven places of lower side i.e., called as mahaatala, rasaatala, atala, sutala, vitala, talaatala, and paataala in the body."
There are words likes "saptasindhu", "saptaloka", "saptaraashi", "saptaarchi", "saptaagni" in the Vedic literature. The accepted meaning of these terms is seven organs only. The following testimonies may be referred to —
sapta shirasi praaNaaH. praaNaa indriyaaNi. indriyaaNi eva aitayaa.apnoti.
(taaNDya-mahabraahmaNa 2.14.2)
sapta vai shiirShan praaNaaH. shiirShanneva tatpraaNaan dadhaati.
(Aitreya braahmaNa 1.3.6)
sapta vai shiirShanyaaH praaNaaH shiraH .... (Taitriiya Samhita 5.1.7.1)
As per these testimonies, this is the description of the seven 'Praana' in the head. These seven 'Praana" exist in the head, and these are organs - two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and one tongue. These are only described. In Mundaka upaniShada, these are termed "Loka"—
sapta praaNaaH prabhavanti tasmaat saptaarchiShaH samidhah sapta homaaH. sapta ime lokaa yeShu charnti praaNaa guhaashayaa nihitaaH satpa sapta.
(Mundaka UpaniShada 2.1.8)
Here also "praaNas" are described. These are seven in the head - two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and one tongue, which are created by GOD. These seven manifest their respective objects. Their knowledge is sevenfold; these are seven "Loka" = places where the "praaNa" = senses exist. These seven sleep in the internal conscious system at the time of sleep and perform during the awakening. GOD had established these seven "praaNa" in each body. From this testimony, it is clear that these seven "praaNa = senses" are also known as "Loka" = place.
Seven "Loka" = places are widely used in Sanskrit literature, that are named "Bhu-loka" and others, which are accepted as placed above the earth level, and seven "Pataala" are accepted to exist below the earth level. On the basis of common nouns used by Seer Vyaasa, in this aphorism, people had created imaginary history in the 'Vishnu puraaNa' and 'Bhagavat puraaNa'. But what are these 14 "Loka"? On the basis of imaginary history in the 'puraaNa' these are said to exist in the external world. In fact, on the basis of testimonies of 'upniShada' and 'braahmaNa grantha' these exist in the body only, i.e., two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, and one tongue are the seven "Loka" = places existing in the upper part of the body and named as "bhuH, bhuvaH, svaH, mahaH, janaH, tapaH, and satya loka". Two hands, two feet, one stomach, one organ for urine, and one organ for stool are seven places which are existing in the lower part body and are named "atala, vitala, sutala, talaatala, mahaatala, rasaatala, pataala"; the place of these are fixed in the body, so, it is rational to accept these as 14 "Lokas" = places in the body. On the other hand, innumerable places exist in the universe, and in such a case prescribing only 14 "lokas" in the universe is against logic and real existence. So, it is clear that this is the description of the body only.
In the same way, there is a description of seven seas and seven islands as —
Seas - of water of salt, sugar cane, wine, clarified butter, curd, gruel, and milk.
Islands - jambu, plakSha, shaalmali, kusha, krou~nch, shaaka and puShkara.
Neither there are seven seas on this earth, nor such seas exist which are of juice of sugar-cane, wine, clarified butter, curd, gruel, and milk. On this earth, the only sea of salty water is there. Again, it is not the description of the outer world or this earth. In Rigveda 1.32.12, 2.12.3, and 2.12.12 word "saptasindhu" is there. The subject matter of these hymns is "indra" which is meant for 'Soul' and 'Sun'. Swami Dayanand Saraswati explained these hymns in the context of 'Sun' and described 'saptasindhu' as - four types of water existence on the earth - sea, river, well, and pond, and three existing in space in the form of clouds, etc. On the other hand, if we explain these hymns in the spiritual meaning then 'indra' will be 'Soul', and with reference to the body, we have to accept the 'saptasindhu' as "praaNa" = senses (as above) only. These seven senses perform their functions in the body under control and on the basis of the mind. In 'shatpatha braahmaNa' mind is called as a sea —
mano vai samudraH. shatapatha braahmaNa 7.5.2.52.
This explanation is in reference to Yajurveda 13.53. It means that the mind is the sea. It is said as the sea because it has innumerable waves of modifications. Further, all the senses exist in the mind (Ref - mansi vai sarve praaNaaH pratiShThitaaH. Shatpatha 7.5.2.6). In the body, the mind and sense organs have fixed places; and on the basis of these organs there are innumerable waves of modifications in the mind, which are even more than the sea; hence mind is called the sea. On the other hand, there are no fixed seven seas or islands on the earth. So, modifications of these "praanas" = senses, taking place on the basis of mind, can be said to of the quality of salty water, juice of sugar cane, wine, clarified butter, curd, gruel, and milk. These only are the seven seas in the body.
With reference to the seas and islands one word "yojana", denoting the distance, is used. The "yojana" is equal to 8 miles of distance. This distance can be used for the physical seas and islands in the world, but cannot be used for the seas, as referred to above, in the context of the body. The other meaning of "yojana" is joint. So, it can be said that there are so, many joints of nerves = muscles in the various parts of the body. So, it is to be understood in the context of joints in a particular part of the body. This has to be cognized by the Sanyama over it.
Hells:- These are named "mahaakaala, ambariSha, rourava, maharourava, kaalasuutra, andhataamisra" which are full of excesses of ghana = solid, salil = water, anala = fire, anila = air, aakaasha = ether, and tama = darkness respectively.
In this context, it is to be understood that Soul goes in various life-states, which are full of pain, ignorance, etc. on the basis of his accumulated vehicle of actions; and suffers various types of pains only, as the fruits of his acts, and there is no scope of achievement of knowledge which can help him to improve his life. So, these various non-human life-states are hells. These hells are made available to the Soul in the form of the body only. So, hell is not a particular place where the Soul experiences pain, but it is the body of various animal beings and trees which are a type of hell only.
In this regard aphorism of Vedanta Philosophy is to be referred to as —
"api cha sapta" (Vedanta 3.1.15). While explaining this aphorism, commentators have accepted seven types of hells that appear in accordance with the philosophy of Seer Vyaasa.
Mountains:- In the explanation Seer Vyaasa had named some mountains, which are raajata, vaiduurya, sphatika, and hemmaNimaya, with blue and white peaks. The question is what do these refer to in the context of the body? In the Brihadaaranyaka-upaniShada liver in the body is said as mountain (Ref - yakrit cha klomaanaH cha parvataa .... Brihadaaranyaka 1.1.1). This secret of this has to be understood —
The mountain is a place that is above the plain, is hard, and with the peaks, such as - the Himalayan range, etc. In the body, the spinal cord is made of hard bones, and above the flesh, a level can be treated as mountains in the body. Or as per the testimony of the brihadaaraNyaka UpniShada liver can be taken as a mountain. These mountain peaks have blue and white colors. The secret behind this is as below:—
1. There is the appearance of colors in the body, on account of three humors of the body i.e., wind, bile, and phlegm, as —
pittam tiikShaNam dravam puuti niilam piitam tathaiva cha. (Sushruta 21.11)
Bile is of blue and golden or yellow color......
shleShmaa shveto ...... (Sushruta 21.15)
Phlegm is of white in color ...
2. In the Chhandogya-upniShada nerves of the heart are said to be full of various colors of juices —
atha vaa etaa hridyastha naaDyaaH taaH pi.ngalasyaaNimnastiShThanti shukalasya niilasya piitasya lohitasya ...... (Chhandogya 8.6.1)
i.e., the nerves of the heart are full of juices of yellow, white, golden, blue, and red colors. In the same way, it has been said in Brihadaarnayaka-upaniShada as —
taa vaa asyaitaa hitaa naama naaDyo yathaa keshaH sahasradhaa bhinnaH-taavataa.aNimnaatiShThanti shuklasya niilasya pi.ngalasya haritasya lohitasya puurNaa... (Brihadaarnaya 4.3.20)
There are benefiting nerves in the body which are minute as of the 100th part of the hair. These are full of juices of white, blue, yellow, green, and red colors.
Now all the parts and bones are covered by various nerves, which results in various colors of such parts and so, said mountains also.
Secrets of Graha, Nakshatra and Taaraa —
These are commonly meant as Grahah = planet, Taaraa = star, and Nakshatra = star = constellation in the world, and various commentators have given this meaning only. But in the context of the body, these meanings are not correct. This is to understand with reference to various testimonies as —
grahaH — cognizance of modifications;
grahaadhiiShaH — Sun = breath and its means in mind.
nakShatra — "nakShati gachchhati-iti nakShatram, taarakaa vaa.
(Unaadi-kosha 3.105)
- kaaraNaruupena.avinashravaraiH (Rigveda 3.54.19 - Swami Dayanand).
The things which do not get destroyed as a material cause.
Intellectual who does not perform evil = vice.
- nakShatraaNi vai janayo ve hi janaaH puNyakritaH svargam lokam yanti teShametaani jyotiishi. (Shatapatha 6.5.4.8)
It refers to the light of intellectuals who performed virtue and attained the state of pleasure.
- devagrihaa vai nakShatraaNi. (Taittriiya braahmaNa 1.5.2.6)
Devagriha = organs = places of organs are 'nakshatra'. From the next testimony, it is clear that organs are also called 'graha' in the Vedic literature —
praaNo vai grahaH....; vaagvai grahaH....; jihvaa vai grahaH......; chakShuH vai grahaH....; shrotram vai grahaH....; mano vai grahaH....; hastau vai grahaH....; tvag vai grahaH.....; (Brihadaaranyaka upniShada 3.2.2-9)
Here all the sense organs, hand, mind, skin, and breath are called 'graha', and subjects of these 'grahas' are smell, color, juice, sound, touch, action, and thinking. These organs by performing such acts = functions, get the Soul bonded in the body. In the external world 'graha' is the planet, but in the context of the body, it is one which grasps; and these organs have grasped the Soul and made him bonded in the body and vicious cycle of the world, so, these are also known as 'graha'.
From the above testimonies, it is clear that only planets and stars of the external world are not the only meant by 'graha', 'taaraa', and 'nakShatra'. With reference to the body, organs, and mind being part of the subtle body, which gets attached to the Soul at the beginning of every creation since eternity, are also known by these nouns. Testimonies for accepting the organs from 'taaraa' are given in the next aphorism.
Further, some common nouns such as 'sudharma devasabhaa' sudarshan pura' vaijayanta praasaada' 'mishravan' and 'nandanvana' etc. are used by Seer Vyaasa in his commentary. Most of the commentators under the impression of 'puraaNas' have explained these as places in heaven = 'indra-loka'. The so-called heaven of 'puraaNas' is imaginary. These nouns are also in the context of this body only, which is to be understood as follows —
Now, who is "indra"? is explained in Aitareya-upaniShada as —
tasmaadidandro naam idandro ha vai naama taam-idandram santam-indra iti-aachakShate prokSheNa. (Aiteraya 1.3.14)
It means that the Soul is called as 'idandra' as he sees the GOD, so, 'idandra' is the name; and as such Soul is known as 'indra' indirectly. Hence one of the names of Soul is "indra". In the same way, the lord of organs is also known as 'indra'. Now the nouns as above are related to the body of this Soul = 'undra', as below —
1. sudharma devasabhaa — This body is the home of organs that perform 'Sudharma' i.e., well-defined virtue since organs are the direct external means for the performance of virtue.
2. sudarshanam puram — 'puram' = place, and 'sudarshanam' = a thing which is worth to be seen; so, the body is the beautiful place of organs that perform virtue and is worth seeing.
3. vaijayanta praasaada — vaijayanta is "indra" only. One who is the lord of organs is called 'Indra' and that is the Soul. The place of living of this Soul, during the lifetime, is this body only which is known as 'vaijayanta praasaada'.
4. Further some gardens such as "mishravana, nandana, chaitraratha, sunaamasa" are named. The meaning of a garden is "the place of pleasure". While giving the meaning of 'nandanavana' it is said as "Garden of 'indra', which gives pleasure". In the Aitareya-upaniShada it is said as —
sa etayeva siimaanam vidaaryaitayaa dvaaraa praapadyata. saiShaa vidritiH-naama dvaaH-tadevannaandanam. (Aitareya-upaniShada 1.3.12).
The Soul = 'indra' enters this body by the path of the scalp = top most point of the head which is known as 'brahmarandra' in Sanskrit literature i.e., the door of entry of the Soul. This door is the place of pleasure and is known as 'naandanam'. So, the above-said door = path is "nandanavana" = place of pleasure in this body. The other nouns can be interpreted in the same way.
Description of persons living in the above Islands, Places, Pataala, Mountain, and Ocean —
1. Residents of islands, earth, mountains, and oceans — These are devas, asura, gandharva, kinnara, kimpuruSha, yakSha, raakShasa, bhuuta, preta, pishaacha, apasmaaraka, apsara, brahma-raakShasa, kuuShmaaNDa, and vinaayaka (These terms are explained further).
2. Residents of Svah-Loka = Maahendra-Loka — These are tridasha, agniShvaata, yaamya, tuShitaa, aparinirmita-vashavarti, and parinirmita-vashavarti (They are possessing the attainments of aNimaa etc.).
3. Residents of Mahah-Loka = Praajaapati-Loka — These are kumuda, ribhava, pratardana, a~njanaabha, and prachitaabha (They have mastery over the gross objects).
4. Residents of Jana-Loka — These are brahmapurohita, brahmakaayika, brahma-mahaakaayika, and ajaraamara (They have mastery over the gross objects and sense organs).
5. Residents of Tapah-Loka — These are aabhaasvara, aahaabhaasvara, and satyamahaabhaasvara (They have mastery over gross objects, sense organs, and Matter).
6. Residents of Satya-Loka — These are achyuta, sudhanivaasa, satyaabha, and sanGYaa-sanGYii (They have mastery over the Matter). Of these achyuta enjoys the bliss of Indistinct Cognitive Trance; sudhanivaasa enjoys the bliss of Meditative Cognitive Trance; satyaabha enjoys the bliss of Elative Cognitive Trance; and sanGYaa-sanGYii enjoys the bliss of Egoistic Cognitive Trance.
An explanation of this is to be understood below —
On this earth, people have varied modifications of the mind. The seven 'pataala' are work organs in the form of two hands, two feet, an organ for urine, one organ for stool, and a body part from neck to stomach; people who are involved in the enjoyment of pleasure from these work organs and involved in the enjoyments available in the form of smell, taste, color, touch, and sound through the sense organs on this earth, come under the first category. This is to be understood that when the modifications of persons are affected by nescience and ignorance, then these fruits in pains and are of inferior qualities only, as in the case of 'raakShasa' and 'pishacha'; and when the modifications are virtuous and for helping the other living beings, then such persons are known as 'devaa'. It means that various categories of people living on the earth are divided on the basis of various types of modifications only. These people can be categorized into the first three states of mind i.e., wandering, stupefied, and distracted states of mind. These people normally do not have any relation with Yoga i.e., concentrated = one-pointed and restrained state of mind.
The common nouns used for the categorization of these persons are qualitative only. While explaining the hymn 3.4 of Yajurveda, the Seer of Shatapatha Brahmaana wrote at 1.1.1.3-4 as — "satyam chaivaanritam cha satyameva devaa anritam manuShyaaH" i.e., one who adopts truth is known as 'deva' = intellectual person; and who adopts falseness is known as 'manuShya' = common man. While writing a commentary on this hymn, Swami Dayanand wrote — "The behavior of the persons is of two types, one truthful-ness, other is false-full-ness. One who adopts truth from the mind, speech, and action is called 'deva' = intellectual'; and those who adopt falseness those persons are 'asura' or 'raakShasa'.
In the same way, Swami Dayanand wrote in the chapter on - "Granthapraamanya.. vishaya" in 'Rigvedaadibhasyabhuumika' as — "The persons who care only for own selfish interest, are busy in pampering their own bodies and are crafty and hypocrites, are 'asuras'; and those who always look towards others benefits, assuage the pains of others, are free from guile and are righteous, should be deemed as 'devas'." Similarly, at another place in the same chapter, he wrote - "Those who speak the truth, believe in truth and act on truth are the 'devas'; those who indulge in falsehood, believe in it and act on falsehood are the 'asuras'." In this way, the categorization of persons is based on qualities only not on the basis of birth.
The following explanations are available in various scriptures with reference to various categories of persons —
deva - One who performs truth by mind, speech, and action;
asura - "asuShu praaNeShu ramate iti-asuraH" i.e., the word 'asu' means 'praaNa' = breath; one who is involved in his own strength, pampering his own needs, interests only; and adopt all type of evils, vices for achieving his needs.
gandharva - "strikaamaa via gandharvaaH" (aitareya-braahmaNa 1.5.1); "yoShitkaamaa vai gandharvaaH" (shatapatha-braahmaNa 3.9.3.20) i.e., one who is having a desire of having an association of woman is called 'gandharva'. "ruupam-iti gandharvaaH" (shatapatha-braahmaNa 10.5.2.20) i.e., one who worships = remain involved the bodily appearance is called as 'gandharva'. So, people who have the desire to have an association with women, lovers of material enjoyment, have a lust for bodily enjoyment, and who are perfect in the knowledge of music, dance, etc. are known in this category.
kinnara - One who is devoid of properties of a man or woman in a body, i.e., called a transgender person.
kimpuruSha - "kimpuruSho vai mayuH" (shatapatha-braahmaNa 7.5.2.32 on Yajurveda 13.47), and the word 'mayuH' is meant for a person who is wild. So, the people who are wild in nature, vice performers, and education-less are known as 'kimpurusha'.
yakSha - One who is involved in the safety and custody of wealth, the worldly property is called 'yakSha'.
raakShasa - "rakShaH rakShitavyamasmaad, rahasi kShaNoti-iti vaa, raatro nakShate iti vaa" (Nirukta 4.18) i.e., one from whom one needs to save one's life, and property; who causes harm in the lonely places; or perform vicious acts like plundering, theft, forceful adultery in the night / or otherwise.
bhuuta - "bhuutebhyaH nakta~ncharebhyaH" i.e., who moves around and works at night.
preta - One who adopts the profession of doing rituals of a dead body.
pishaacha - "ye pishitam = avayaviibhuutam, peshitam vaa maa.nsam rudhiraadikam, aachamanti bhakShayanti te pishaachaaH" i.e., one who eat the raw flesh of other living beings, and drink their blood; killer, adulterer, extremely involved in vicious acts, having humanity-less-ness and abominable behavior/nature.
apasmaaraka - The meaning of the word "apasmaara" is not having memory power. So, one who does not have memory power is known as "apasmaaraka".
apsara - "gandha iti-apsarasaH (upaasate)" (shatapatha-braahmaNa 10.5.2.20) i.e one who is deeply involved in the subjects achievable through the sense organs of the body (Also refer to our explanatory notes on "apsaraa" in the Vyaasa commentary).
brahma-raakShasa - Foetus-killing is said as "brahma-killing". One who kills the fetus is "brahma-raakShasa".
kuuShmaaNDa - "uushmaa aNDeShu yasya" i.e., one who is deeply involved in physical pleasure.
vinaayaka - is one who is a teacher, and removes all the problems.
2-6. By giving the normal consideration to the names given to the residents of "svaH-loka" to "satya-loka", it is clear these are the not specific life-states of the "devas" = intellectuals. These names are based on the qualities adopted by these intellectuals. In this regard, the following names are worth considering — "aparinirmita-vashavarti, and aarinirmita-vashavarti" being residents of 'svaH-loka'; "brahmakaayika, brahma-mahaakaayika" being residents of 'jana-loka'; "aabhaasvara, mahaabhaasvara, and satyamahaabhaasvara" being residents of 'tapaH-loka'; and "sanGYaa-sanGYii" being residents of 'satya-loka'. These all names are clearly based on the qualities of persons.
These all people are the achievers of Cognitive Trance and they have attained various attainments which are as below:—
- Persons possessing attainments of aNimaa etc. are the residents of svaH-loka.
- Persons having mastery over gross objects are the residents of mahaH-loka.
- Persons having mastery over gross objects and sense organs are the residents of jana-loka.
- Persons having mastery over gross objects, sense organs, and Matter are the residents of tapaH-loka.
- Persons having achieved the Indistinct Cognitive Trance to Egoism Cognitive Trance and having mastery over the Matter are the residents of satya-loka.
In this regard it is to be understood that some of the commentators have mentioned the specific places in the universe as svaH-loka to satya-Loka; but this presumption is based on the unrealistic history given in the puraNaas. But from the explanation "lokyata iti lokaH" it is clear that what is achieved by experience is known as "loka", so, all this word refers to a particular situation only, not to place. In this regard, there is a testimony in katha-upaniShada—
yathaadarshe tathaatmani yathaa svapne tathaa pitriloke.
yathaapsu pariiva dadrishe tathaa gandharvaloke chhaayaatapayoriva bhrahmaloke. (katha-upaniShadaa 6.5)
As the things are clearly seen in the clear mirror, in the same way, GOD is cognized by the persons having the pure mind; and as objects are seen in the dream on account of potencies of awakening, so, the GOD cannot be experienced by the people who are involved in the worldly acts; and as the things are not clearly cognized in the water as in case of a mirror, in the same way, people who are involved in the knowledge of singing and are having a desire of worldly enjoyments, only have the impression of knowledge of GOD, but the intellectuals having the knowledge of GOD have the experience of GOD in all states of mind.
From the above it is clear that the word "loka" refers to the state of mind, not a particular place; as 'pitriloke' is the state of involvement in worldly acts, and the word 'gandharvaloke' refers to the state of people having knowledge of singing and having a desire of worldly enjoyments. Various intellectuals have accepted this meaning.
Here in this aphorism 'janaloka', 'tapoloka', and 'satyaloka' are called 'brahmaloka'; and if we take the meaning of these words as particular places, then some of the intellectuals argue that since all the places of the universe are pervaded by the GOD, so, considering only these places as 'brahmaloka' = place of GOD is against the principles. In this regard, we wish to say that the word 'brahmalokeShu' is used in Mundaka-UpaniShada 3.2.6, and the word 'brahmalokaan' is used in brihadaaranyaka-upaniShada 6.2.15, and these words refer to the achievement of "places of GOD" by the Souls. As all the places are pervaded by the GOD, so, all the places are of GOD only, then what is the meaning of 'achieving the places of GOD' from the above testimonies? In fact, it is the 'state of achieving the cognizance of GOD', not the particular place which can be referred to as the place of GOD, as since all the places are pervaded by GOD, so, all the living beings = Souls are existing in the places of GOD only. The terminology used by Seer Vyaasa that 'janaloka', 'tapoloka', and 'satyaloka' are the 'brahmaloka' is having a relationship with aphorisms 4.3.7 to 4.3.77 of Vedanta Aphorisms of Seer Vyaasa.
So here achieving any particular 'loka' should be considered as achieving the specific state of mind which has the qualities as described above.
Lifetime of 'devas' = Intellectuals — The meaning of lifetime is the time from birth to death. The commentators of this aphorism had prescribed the lifetime of residents of 'svaH-loka' as one 'Kalpa. (One 'Kalpa means the time period of one creation and holocaust, which is equal to 8,64,00,00,000 years, as per Vedic scriptures); and thereafter for residents of 'mahaH-loka' called 'kumuda', it is prescribed as 1000 Kalpa, and then the same is doubled for every next category of intellectual, which ends at 128000 Kalpa for a resident named 'satyamahaabhasvar' of 'tapaH-loka'. And for the residents of 'satya-loka' it is said as till the end of this creation. In fact, there is clear confusion with regard to lifetime as above. How to accept the lifetime of the intellectual of the highest stage i.e., the resident of 'satya-loka' lower than the lifetime of intellectuals of lower stages?
The secret of this is clear above. When the categories of intellectuals are based on the level of knowledge and attainments of Yoga, then the prescribed lifetime in terms of 'Kalpa as above is not possible with this human body. In fact, one meaning 'Kalpa is the rule. It means that these intellectuals live their lives as per the rules of Vedic scriptures and Yoga. As the performance of rules, of the Vedic scriptures, and yoga, increase so is the level of intelligence. Thus, the rules performed by the intellectuals of 'svaH-loka' are more than the rules to be performed by the intellectuals of 'mahaH-loka' and so, on. Here the word "sahasram" meant more/many, not 1000 (one thousand). And with regard to the lifetime of intellectuals of 'satya-loka', which is said as till the end of this creation, is to be understood as follows —
In aphorism 1.19, Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the experience of just like salvation for the intellectuals called 'videha' and 'prakritilaya', since their authoritative mind

समुद्र — क्षार, इक्षुरस, सुरा, घी, दही, माण्ड तथा दुग्ध के;
ग्रहः = वृत्तियों का ग्रहण = प्रत्यक्षीकरण;
— अर्थात् कारण रूप से नाश न होने वाले;
देव — मन, वाणी और शरीर से सत्याचरण करने वाले;
असुर — असुषु प्राणेषु रमते इत्यसुरः। अर्थात् असु = प्राण; जो अपने देह और प्राणों के ही पोषण में, अपने ही स्वार्थ, सुख-सुविधा, धन और हितसाधन में तत्पर रहते हैं, उसकी पूर्त्ति के लिए छल-प्रपंच माया-जाल आदि रचने वाले हो, उन्हें असुर कहते हैं;
किन्नर — शरीर की दृष्टि से पुरुष अथवा स्त्री में से किसी एक के धर्मों से रहित;
यक्ष — लौकिक धन, सम्पत्ति की रक्षा करने वाले तथा उस की रक्षा हेतु ही सभी प्रकार का पुरुषार्थ करने वाले पुरुष;
राक्षस — रक्षः रक्षितव्यमस्माद्, रहसि क्षणोतीति वा, रात्रौ नक्षते इति वा॥ निरुक्त ४.१८॥ अर्थात् जिससे धन-सम्पत्ति, प्राण आदि की रक्षा करनी पड़े, जो एकान्त अवसर पाकर हानि पहुँचाते और रात्रि में लूट-पाट, चोरी व्यभिचार आदि दुष्ट कर्म करने वाले पुरुष;
भूत — भूतेभ्यः नक्तञ्चरेभ्यः अर्थात् जो रात्रि में विचरण एवं कार्य करता हो;
प्रेत — प्रेत कर्म कराने वाला;
पिशाच — ये पिशितम् = अवयवीभूतं, पेशितं वा मांसं रुधिरादिकम्, आचमन्ति भक्षयन्ति ते पिशाचाः। अर्थात् प्राणियों का कच्चा मांस, रक्त तक खाने-पीने वाले, हिंसक, दुराचारी, अनाचारी, अत्यन्त तमोगुणी, निम्न एवं घृणित स्वभाव वाले पुरुष;
अपस्मारक — अपस्मार का अर्थ है स्मरण शक्ति का अभाव, अतः अपस्मारक वह पुरुष होता है जिसमें स्मरणशक्ति का अभाव हो;
ब्रह्मराक्षस — भ्रूणहत्या अर्थात् ब्रह्महत्या करने वाला पुरुष;
अणिमादि विभूतियों से सम्पन्न पुरुष स्वः लोक निवासी कहाते हैं;
महाभूतों पर वशीत्व प्राप्त किए हुए पुरुष महः लोक निवासी कहाते हैं;
भूत और इन्द्रियों पर अधिकार को प्राप्त किए हुए पुरुष जनलोक निवासी कहाते हैं;
