In English:
Component Word : chandre taaraavyuuhaj~naanam.
Sutra in English : chandre taaraavyuuhaj~naanam.27.
Meaning in English : (chandre) By Sanyama over mind, the yogi gets (taaraa-vyuuha-j~naanam) the knowledge of the system of sense organs (= being the means of light = knowledge for the Soul).
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : chandre sa.myama.m kRRitvaa taaraaNaa.m vyuuha.m vijaaniiyaat.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (sa.nyamam kritvaa) By performing Sanyama (chandre) in the mind, a yogi should (vijaaniiyaat) know (vyuuham) the system (taaraaNaam) of sense organs which are the means of attaining light = knowledge for the soul.
Vedic Commentary in English : All the commentators, including Bhoja, had explained this aphorism by taking the "Moon" or 'Chandra nerve' in the body as an object of Sanyama and declared the knowledge of stars in the sky by such Sanyama. But this type of explanation is far from the facts, on account of the following grounds —
1. Stars are the source of light in the universe, whereas the moon shines by getting the light from a star / Sun, of the solar system, to which it is related.
2. The moon normally revolves around a planet to which it is related, and exists in the sky according to the position of such planet.
3. The moon has a relationship with the Sun of the solar system in which it exists, but it cannot be related to the numerous stars of the galaxy and universe. Further 'Chandra nerve' in the body cannot be said to be related to the infinite stars of the universe, nor there is any testimony in this regard.
So, there is no proof of any relation of knowledge of a system of stars with the moon or 'Chandra nerve', in the Vedic scriptures. On the other hand, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa have declared the same very clearly in this aphorism. We have to understand the secret of this aphorism —
In this last aphorism I had given scriptural testimonies with regard to "suurya" as 'breath' in the physical bodies; in the same way, there should be some organ in this body that is related to the 'chandramaa' of this aphorism. In the aphorism 3.1-3 it is very clearly said that external objects cannot be the subject of Sanyama. Let us understand the secret of this —
chandramaa manso jaataH. (Yajurveda 31.12)
i.e., the moon is created from the capacity of the mind of the Supreme Lord. (Swami Dayanand)
chandrama me mansi shritaH. (Taittiriiya-braahmaNa 3.10.8.5)
- i.e., The 'chandramaa' = moon is existing in the mind.
manaschandramaaH. (Aitareya upaniShada 1.1.4)
- 'Chandramaa' = moon got manifested from the mind.
chandramaa vai brahmaa.adhidaivam manaH-adhyaatm.
(Gopatha-braahmaNa 1.4.2)
- i.e., in the divine context moon is the mind.
yattanmana eSha sa chandramaaH. (Shatapatha-braahmaNa 10.3.3.7)
- The mind in the body is 'chandramaa' = moon.
chandramaa mano bhuutvaa hridayam praavishan. (Aitareya upaniShada 1.2.4)
- 'Chandramaa' = moon entered the heart in the form of the moon.
yadidam manaH so.asau chandraH. (brihadaaraNyaka-upaniShada 3.1.6)
- The object which is mind, that is 'chandramaa' = moon.
So, the various seers have described the word "Chandra", which is denoted for the moon in the solar system, as the mind in the body. So, it is clear that "chandramaa" is the mind in the body.
Now by performing Sanyama over the mind, what is achieved? Seer Patanjali said by performing Sanyama over the mind, yogi get the knowledge of systems of stars. What are these stars? One needs to give serious thought to this. The reply to this question is also available in these Vedic scriptures —
mano.antarikShalokaH. (Shatapatha-braahmaNa 14.4.3.11)
- i.e., the mind is sky = space. Now, what is existing in this sky? It is said —
mansi hi sarve praaNaaH pratiShThitaaH. (Shatapatha-braahmaNa 7.5.2.6)
- i.e., all the 'praaNaas' are existing in the mind.
mano vai praaNaanaam-adhipatiH-mansi hi sarve praaNaaH pratiShThitaaH. (Shatapatha-braahmaNa 14.3.2.3)
- Mind is the lord of all 'praaNaas' and all the 'praaNaas' exist in the mind.
Now what are these 'praaNaas'? —
sapta shirsi praaNaaH. praaNaah indriyaani. (taaNDya-mahaabraahmaNa 2.14.2)
- i.e., there are seven 'praaNaas' in the head, and 'praaNaas' are organs.
So, from the above, it is clear that 'praaNaas' which exist in the mind are organs.
So, by performing Sanyama over the mind, Yogi gets knowledge of the system of sense organs.
Query:- Seer Patanjali had prescribed the knowledge of 'taaraa' = stars by performing Sanyama over the 'Chandra = moon. If as per the above testimonies, we accept the 'mind' as one of the meanings of 'Chandra, even then it is not proper to accept the organs from the word 'taaraa'.
Solution:- See 'taaraa' is meant for 'stars' in the world, and these are the means of light. In the spiritual world, knowledge is known as light; and organs are the means by which one gets knowledge of various objects of the outer world. Now organs exist in the mind, come into contact with the objects of the world, and make these objects available in the mind and ultimately Soul gets the knowledge of the objects existing in this world. One who does not have eyes or if his eyes are defective is not able to see the objects of the world. So, organs are the means of light in the body and Yogi gets the knowledge of the system of these sense organs by performing Sanyama over the mind.
It appears that Bhoja had explained the aphorism in the context of the moon and stars on the basis of several other testimonies available in the Vedic literature which are in the context of the material world only. But such a type of explanation is against the conception of Yoga, as defined by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa. Commentators after Bhoja had blindly followed him and explained the aphorism in the materialistic context of the moon and stars. As per the testimonies given above it is proper to accept the mind and organs from the words 'Chandra and 'taaraa' of this aphorism and the explanation given above is in line with the principle of Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa.
