Component Word : dhruve tad gatij~naanam.
Sutra in English : dhruve tadgatij~naanam.28.
Meaning in English : (dhruve) By Sanyama over the stable mind, the yogi gets (tad-gati-j~naanam) the knowledge of the movement of sense organs towards their objects.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : tato dhruve sa.myama.m kRRitvaa taaraaNaa.m gati.m vijaaniiyaat. uurdhvavimaaneShu kRRitasa.myamastaani vijaaniiyaat.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tataH) After having the knowledge of the system of sense organs, (sa.nyamam kritvaa) by performing Sanyama (dhruve) over the stable mind, Yogi (vijaaniiyaat) should know (gatim) the movement (taaraaNaam) of the sense organs towards their respective objects. (krita-sa.nyamaH) By having Sanyama (uurdhva-vimaaneShu) over the higher states = planes of mind, Yogi (vijaaniiyaat) should also know (taani) those planes = states of mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism it is stated that by performing Sanyama over the mind, a yogi is able to get the knowledge of the system of organs. When he cognizes the system of sense organs in the body, at that stage he wishes to know the movement of sense organs towards their objects. So, Seer Patanjali had prescribed - 'dhruve tad-gati-GYaana' i.e., by performing Sanyama over the stable mind, the yogi may know the movement of sense organs towards their respective objects.
The mind is involved in the vicious cycle of modification-potency-modification since eternity, so, the Soul is not able to know the natural movement of the mind toward the external objects and he keeps on strengthening the afflicted modification - afflicted potency - afflicted modification cycle. But in order to move on the path of Yoga, it is extremely important for him to come out of this afflicted modification-potency-modification cycle. Only by knowing the natural movement of organs towards the external objects, one can be able to stop this afflicted cycle. So, firstly Seer Patanjali had advised knowing the system of organs by performing Sanyama over the mind, then he had prescribed to perform Sanyama over the stable mind to know the movement of sense organs toward their objects.
In the commentary on aphorism 2.45, Swami Dayanand wrote - "... the senses are brought under control with the control of the mind". It means that when the mind is wandering the organs move toward their objects, as per the wish of the Soul only, in a natural way; but one is not able to know this fact during worldly affairs. When the mind is brought under control, then the mind can divert every sense organ towards its object as per its own wish; and in this way, the yogi becomes able to know the movement of every sense organ. It means that he is able to know which sense organ is moving toward its object, by which reason (i.e., nescience, attachment, aversion, illusion, etc.), or due to the effect of potencies existing in the mind.
In Yajurveda 7.25 the advice is - "dhruveNa manasaa vaachaa". While writing on this Swami Dayanand said - "... by the stable mind and controlled speech (= representative of senses), one should cognize the supreme stable GOD". So, for the control of senses, stability of mind is an essential precondition; and then only the devotee is able to move other senses, by having the knowledge of their movement, toward the desired objects. So, here is the advice of control of the senses by the control of the mind. Seer Vyaasa had also prescribed knowledge of higher planes = states of mind by performing Sanyama over those planes.
Here, like the previous two aphorisms, knowledge of stars by having Sanyama over the pole star (= being an external object) should be treated as against the principles.
Query:- The commentators have accepted the pole star from "Dhruva", and prescribed the knowledge of stars, by performing Sanyama over the pole star. Whereas this explanation is entirely different.
Solution:- This assumption is also based on the commentary of Bhoja. In fact, there is no stable star or planet in this universe. The stability of a star or planet can be explained in the context of another star or planet. As Earth is stable with regard to Sun, as it moves around the Sun on a fixed distance; and the moon is stable with regard to the Earth, as it moves around the Earth. In fact, none of the stars = planets can be stable; neither the Sun is stable, nor the Earth, nor the moon are stable. All these move in their orbits. No star can exist in space without movement, this is cosmology; and there are testimonies of Vedas in this regard —
GOD has created a great orbit for the sun in the sky, which shines with the fuel of air. All these planets = stars have their respective orbits in the sky. No planets have inter-relation with others but move in their own orbits ... (Commentary on Rigveda 1.24.8 by Swami Dayanand Saraswati).
So, the assumption of any stable star is imaginary. If we refer to the aphorism there is no mention of 'star' in this. In such a case how we can interpret the knowledge of the movement of stars from the aphorism? The reply to this is given that there is a reference to knowledge of the movement of stars in the Vyaasa commentary. However, commentators have taken the reference to 'star' from the previous aphorism and given the meaning accordingly. In fact, this explanation is wrong since the explanation of the previous aphorism was wrongly done by such commentators.
In fact, the word 'Dhruva is meant for stableness which is an adjective for the noun 'Chandra = mind of the previous aphorism. With this reference, the meaning of aphorism is very clear now.
Query:- If your explanation of the three aphorisms is accepted as correct, then the question arises - why did Seer Patanjali prescribe these attainments in the rhetorical language? Why was clear language not used for these attainments also?
Solution:- The literal meanings of sun, moon, and pole-star for 'Surya', 'Chandra', and 'Dhruva' became popular after a long time after the epic of Mahabharata. From the explanation of aphorism 3.1 to 3.3 it is very clear that external objects have no relation with the Sanyama for trance; for this reason, we have clarified the meaning of these terms on the basis of various testimonies of Vedic literature, as such can be proved as internal objects for Sanyama. During that period, on account of the study of Vedic scriptures, there was no confusion about the meanings of the above terms. So, when Seer Vyaasa had written commentary on the yoga aphorisms, then he explained these aphorisms in the same way as Seer Patanjali had described. See we have proved above that moon cannot be related to the whole star systems of the universe and there is no stable star that can be called 'Dhruva.
As organs are accepted from the word 'PraaNaa' in the Vedic scriptures; and Seer Vyaasa had used the word 'praaNaa' for the sense organs in his Vedanta philosophy. In the same way, it is possible that in the context of the body / scriptural context word 'Surya' was used for the 'breath', and the word 'Chandra was used for the 'mind' as normal practice during that period since same meanings are available in the Vedas and other Vedic scriptures for the words 'Surya' and 'Chandra'.
It appears that these meanings were in practical usage during that time and there was no confusion, among the seers and Yogis, in this regard. On account of the non-study of Vedic scriptures during the later periods, non-performance of yogic practices, and creation of an imaginary and wrong history for the various nouns used by Seer Vyaasa in the aphorism 3.26 above, the real meaning of these aphorisms got replaced by the meaning in the context of the materialistic world. This can be clearly seen in the commentary of Bhoja. I will like to say that if — (1) the wrong history available in PuraNas is not taken into account; (2) the yogic conception of Seer Patanjali that external objects cannot be base of Sanyama in the trance, is kept in mind; and (3) meaning of these terms is seen in the context of Vedic scriptures and keeping in mind the cosmology study; then the meaning given by various commentators like Bhoja and others cannot be proved as possible. So, I will say that the style of explanation used by Seer Vyaasa is not rhetorical, but it was common in the context of various Vedic scriptures.
