Component Word : te samaadhau upasargaaH vyutthaane siddhayaH.
Sutra in English : te samaadhaavupasargaa vyutthaane siddhayaH.37.
Meaning in English : (te) The powers of pre-science etc. (upasargaaH) are obstacles (samaadhau) for Trance, however, (siddhayaH) are attainments (vyutthaane) in the state of outgoing mind (= i.e., in the worldly affairs.)
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : te praatibhaadayaH samaahitachittasyotpadyamaanaa upasargaaH taddarshanapratyaniikatvaat. vyutthitachittasyotpadyamaanaaH siddhayaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (te) These, (praatibhaadayaH) the powers of pre-science, etc., (utpadyamaanaaH) being appearing (samaahita-chittasya) in the tranced mind, are (upasargaaH) obstacles for the yogi, (pratyaniikatvaat) since these oppose (tad-darshana) the notion of self = Soul. However, these, (utpadya-maanaaH) appearing (vyutthita-chittasya) in the mind when it is in the state of worldly affairs or attached to the material world, (siddhayaH) are attainments.
Vedic Commentary in English : Attainments of pre-science etc., which are achieved after the knowledge of the Soul, are obstacles for Trance, however, these are attainments during the time of worldly affairs. Since the experience and knowledge, obtained by these attainments and others explained above, are the subject matter of mind and are opposite to the cognizance of Soul = self.
In aphorism 3.35 it is explained that knowledge of the Soul takes place by performing Sanyama over the "notion of own object", and that knowledge of the Soul does not become the characteristic of mind, on the other hand, this knowledge is based on himself = Soul only. Vyaasa on 3.35) On the other hand knowledge of attainments is experienced by the Soul on the basis of mind. So, after the knowledge of the Soul, all the attainments become obstacles to attaining higher planes of Yoga.
After the knowledge of the Soul, the yogi adopts Supreme Desirelessness, in order to put efforts into the cognizance of the Soul, so, that he can cognize GOD and the Soul as well in the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance. In this whole process, he has to become desireless even towards the Qualities and their properties, and characteristics, in order to achieve the state of Supreme Desirelessness.
On the other hand, by these attainments yogi gets the knowledge and experience of subtle objects through his organs; and by pre-science, he gets the past and future knowledge of all the products of Matter, and remains involved in their imperceptible and expanded knowledge. This whole knowledge makes the yogi move on the path, which is opposite to the state of Supreme Desirelessness. So, all these attainments and other attainments are said as obstacles to achieving trance in order to achieve the target of cognizance of the Soul.
However, in the state of outgoing mind = worldly affairs, these all are attainments, as he gets importance and fame in the society, and also has pleasure on having the specialized knowledge and experience.
So, a yogi should remain alert to these attainments, remove these obstacles, should put efforts into achieving discriminative knowledge and Supreme Desirelessness. Otherwise, he will strengthen his afflicted modification - potencies - modification vehicle and remain involved in the life-cycle of the world.
