Ancient seer Meaning in English : (tat dharmaadi nimittam) The incidental cause in the shape of virtue and vice (hi) certainly (na bhavati) does not become (prayojakam) motive (prakritiinaam) for the material causes of body and organs; since (kaaraNam) cause (na pravarttate) is not moved into action (kaaryeNa iti) by the effect. (katham tarhi) Then how the change in the next life-state take place? (tataH) By causes in the form of virtue and vice (tu) only (varaNabhedaH) piercing = removal of obstacles of material cause takes place (kShetrikavat) like the working of a farmer.
(yathaa) As (kShetrikaH) a farmer (piplaavayiShuH) desirous of carrying water (apaam puurNaat kedaaraat) from an already well-filled bed to (samam nimnam nimnataram vaa kedaaraantaram) another bed which is on the same or a lower level, (na) does not (apakarShati) draw (apaH) water (paaNinaa) with his own hands; (tu) but (bhinatti) simply removes (aavaraNam) obstacles (aasaam) of the water, and (tasmin bhinne) on the removal of obstacles (aapaH) water (aaplaavayanti) flows down (svayam eva) of itself (kedaaraantaram) to the other bed. (tathaa) Similarly, (dharmaH) virtue also (bhinatti) removes (prakritiinaam aavaraNam) obstacles of material-causes (adharmam) which are in the shape of vice; and (tasmin bhinne) on the removal of obstacles of vice (prakritayaH) the material-causes of body and organs (aaplaavayanti) passes (svayam eva) itself (svam svam vikaaram) to their respective modifications.
(vaa) Or (yathaa) as (sa eva) the same (kShetrikaH) farmer (na) does not (prabhavati) become capable of (anupraveshayitum) transferring (audakaan bhaumaan vaa rasaan) the watery and earthy juices (dhaanya-muulaani) to the roots of rice (tasmin eva kedaare) in the same bed. (kim tarhi) Then how it happens? He (apakarShati) weeds the (mudga-gavedhuka-shyaamaakaadiin) the grasses named the 'ring', the 'Gavedhuka' and the 'shyaamaaka' (tataH) out of the bed; (teShu apakriShTeShu) when these grasses have been wed out, (rasaaH svayam eva) juices themselves (anupravishanti) enter (dhaanya-muulaani) to the roots of rice. (tathaa) Similarly, (dharmaH) virtue (kaaraNam) becomes cause (nivritti) of removal (adharmasya) of the vice (maatre) alone, since (atyanta-virodhaat) there is extreme opposition to each other in (shuddhi-ashuddhyoH) purity and impurity. (dharmaH) Virtue, (tu) however, (na bhavati) does not become (hetuH) cause (prakriti-pravrittau iti) of action for the material cause. (atra) In this regard (nandiishvaraadayaH) 'Nandiishvar' etc. (udaahaaryaaH) are examples. (viparyayeNa) On the other side, too, (adharmaH) vice (api) also (baadhate) counteracts (dharmam) virtue; (cha) and (tataH) by that act (ashuddhi-pariNaamaH iti) it results in impurity. (atra) In this regard (api) also (nuhuSha-ajagaraadayaH) 'Nuhusha' and 'Ajagara' etc. (udaahaaryaaH) are examples.
Vedic Commentary in English : How does the life-state change take place? While clarifying this in the last aphorism it had been said that it takes place by filling up of material causes for body and organs i.e., by entering of atoms of gross objects and Egoism. This change in the life-state is not independent, but it takes place on account of incidental causes of virtue and vice, which is the system = rule of GOD. This had been described in the last aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that though the atoms of gross objects and Egoism are being filled up on account of the incidental cause of virtue and vice, these incidental causes are not a direct motivating force for the material cause i.e., atoms of gross objects and Egoism do not become activated directly by virtue and vice and get involved in the formation of body and organs for life-state change.
Why virtue and vice, being the incidental cause, are not motives for the material causes of the body and organs? As per Seer Vyaasa, the answer to this question is that cause is not moved into action by the effect. From this, it appears that virtue and vice are work = effect as compared to atoms of gross objects and Egoism !!!, i.e., material causes of body and organs in the gross objects, and Egoism are causes of virtue and vice. On the other hand, the Soul is the performer of virtue and vice, who is an independent doer of acts, and he alone receives the fruits of acts in the form of life-state, lifetime, and experiences. In such a state, the meaning of the statement that atoms of gross objects and Egoism are the causes of virtue and vice is that the Soul becomes capable of performing virtue and vice only on receiving body and organs in the form of life-state, not before that.
Then how do virtue and vice perform for the creation of body and organs, as per his vehicle of actions, for the next life-state for the Soul? For this Seer Patanjali said that these incidental causes of virtue and vice remove the obstacles of material causes, like the work of a farmer. As a farmer desirous of carrying water from one bed to another bed, just removes the obstacles of a well-filled bed, and with the result, water flows automatically to the other bed at the same plane or lower plane. Here farmer does not do any direct action on the water, he simply removes the obstacles of the first bed, and water automatically flows to the other bed. Another example of the work of the farmer is also given as he does not directly transfer the earthy and watery juices to the roots of rice, but he removes the grasses named as the 'ring', the 'Gavedhuka' and the 'shyaamaaka', which are obstacles, from the bed and with the result earthy and watery juices automatically enters into the roots of rice.
In the same way, incidental causes of virtue and vice perform their work. These two are completely opposite to each other. By the performance of virtue, obstacles of vice are removed, as on the performance of virtue by 'Nandiishvara', his residual potencies of vice got destroyed, and with the result, he got the category of 'deva = intellectual'. In this example, by the performance of virtue in order to achieve the category of 'deva', the destruction of obstacles of vice is specified. In the same way by the performance of vice, virtue is obstructed, and a result of such performance is the accumulation of impurities in the mind, and an example of this is 'NuhuSha'. 'NuhuSha' was in the category of the king of 'deva = highly intellectuals', and by the performance of vice, he passed out of his category and came into the category of evil persons. In this example of achieving inferior = evil change, the cover of virtuous acts got destroyed by the performance of vice by 'NuhuSha'.
In fact, the advice behind both examples is, that compliance with virtue in the present life, makes the man superior and intellectual by weakening = destroying the veils of vice; and in the same way, compliance with vice in the present life makes him crooked by destroying the covers of virtuous acts. Similarly, the incidental causes of virtue and vice, by destroying the opposite cover vice or virtue, enables the entering of atoms of gross objects and Egoism for the creation of body and organs for the change of life-state.
While seeing both these examples of change of life-state, many of the commentators have accepted the change of life-state in the present life. But this confusion is on account of not understanding the Vyaasa gloss. See, in this regard, Seer Vyaasa wrote in his commentary on aphorism 2.12 - "As for example the young Nandiishvara passed out of normal human category and achieved the category of 'devataa' i.e., highly intellectual who accepts and perform the truth in all ways. Similarly, NuhuSha, the ruler = king of highly spiritual intellectuals, also due to his vehicle of vicious actions passed out of his own category and came into the category of evil persons". The question arises - "Were these two not the change of life-state?" For a reply to this question, there is a statement of Seer Vyaasa from aphorism 2.13 - "The vehicle of actions which gives its fruits in the present life, bring one type of fruits as causing life-experience; or bring about two types of fruits as causing life-time and life-experience, as in case of Nandiishvara or NahuSha". From the above, it is clear that changes of superiority and inferiority in the present life of Nandiishvara and NahuSha, were not the changes in life-state.
As the performance of virtue and vice, removes the covers, and veils of vice and virtue respectively in the present life, which makes the person superior or crooked, so, in the same way, these incidental causes remove the obstacles of their opposites for change of life-state also. In this way by removal of obstacles of opposites, no reference is available in the Vedic scriptures to how it affects the creation of body and organs for the other life-state? But the same can be generally understood as follows — for the creation of body and organs for change in life-state, removal of obstacles of vice and virtue by the incidental causes of virtue and vice, it can be known in the form of superiority, inferiority, completeness, defectiveness of body and organs. It means that by the effect of accumulated virtue and vice by the Soul, body, and organs receivable in the next life-state will be of superior quality, medium quality, or inferior quality; in the same way, body parts in the next life-state will complete or short or defective; and capability of organs will be of a high, medium or lower level. See different animals and birds have specific superior sense organs that others do not have. But complete knowledge of this system vests in GOD only.
So one gets the change in life-state by the performance of virtue and vice in the present life; in the present life he can make body-change by consumption of medicines; in the same way, he can increase the capacity = power of the body and organs by the incantation of hymns i.e., logical thinking and performance of rules prescribed in Vedic scriptures or by the opposite performance of these he can destroy his body and organ's powers; improves the body and organs by purificatory action; and is able to create his body and organs in different ways by the performance of trance (Refer different aphorisms given in 3rd chapter which result in specific changes in body and organs - 3.24, 3.29, 3.30, 3.31, 3.36, 3.38, 3.39, 3.40, 3.41, 3.42, 3.44-46, 3.47. By all these attainments, the yogi gains superiority in the physical body. So, this is a kind of creation of a body by the yogi). Yogi becomes able to create the body in the five types. In these five types of bodies, there is also a creation of five types of mental levels = mind. (Refer Vyaasa gloss on 4.6 - 'pa~nchavidha nirmaaNachittam janma-aushadhi-mantra-tapaH samaadhijaaH siddhaya iti'.) In the next aphorism - how do these five types of mind creation take place? is described.
