Component Word : nirmaaNachittaani asmitaamaatraat.
Preface to Sutra in English : yadaa tu yogii bahuunkaayaannirmimiite tadaa kimekamanaskaaste bhavantyathaanekamanaskaa iti —
Meaning in English : (yadaa) When, (tu) however, (yogii) yogi (nirmimiite) built up (bahuun kaayaan) the body of various levels as above (tadaa) then (kim) are (te) these body levels (eka-manaskaaH bhavanti) have one mind = knowledge (atha) or (aneka-manaskaaH) have many minds = knowledge levels? (iti) In this regard it is said that—
Sutra in English : nirmaaNachittaanyasmitaamaatraat.4.
Meaning in English : Yogi (nirmaaNa-chittaani) creates various levels of minds = knowledge (asmitaamaatraat) by self-ness form.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : asmitaamaatra.m chittakaaraNamupaadaaya nirmaaNachittaani karoti. tataH sachittaani bhavantiiti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (asmitaa-maatram) The state of self-ness alone is (chitta-kaaraNam) cause of mind = knowledge, and (upaadaaya) by that cause, yogi (karoti) creates (nirmaaNa-chittaani) various levels of minds = knowledge. (tataH) Therefore all those built-up levels of body (bhavanti) become (sachittaani iti) possessed with separate level of mind = knowledge.
Vedic Commentary in English : While writing a commentary on this aphorism, other commentators had created a blunder. As per them - "yogi is able to create different minds from its material cause 'atoms of Egoism' for different bodies created by him so, that all those bodies are with the separate mind". Such type of meaning was given by Vachaspati Mishra for the first time, on whom there must have been the effect of Bhoja commentary; and commentators of later age had blindly followed him. The commentary of Bhoja on this aphorism is totally against the principles.
There is a specific relation between aphorisms 1 to 6 of this chapter, which is not noted by commentators, otherwise, the above type of meaning would not have been possible. There is another system of philosophy given by Seer Vyaasa, which is known as Vedanta Philosophy, where he wrote —
jagadvyaapaaravarjam prakaraNaadasannihitatvaat cha. (Vedanta 4.4.17)
i.e., emancipated Souls have prosperity except in the acts of creation of the universe, etc. In such a case what is the limit of his prosperity? it is said —
vikaaraavartti cha tathaa hi sthitimaaha. (Vedanta 4.4.19)
i.e., the prosperity of emancipated Souls is up to the use of products of Matter since the same is prescribed in the scriptures.
When Seer Vyaasa had established, on the basis of Vedic scriptures, in Vedanta Philosophy that even an emancipated Soul does not have the power to the creation of objects of the universe, and he remains limited to the use of these objects; then the presumption that he advised for creation of the mind, as material changes, from the 'atoms of Egoism' by the yogi, is not possible. Characteristic changes of gross objects and organs (the last work products of Matter) are possible by individuals to some extent, but the power of material changes vests only in GOD. So, we have to understand the meaning of the terms of this aphorism in the proper context.
NirmaaNa-chittani (= Creation of Mind = mental level):- In Yog-darshan word 'asmitaa' is used at five places - 1.17, 2.3, 2.6, 3.47, and 4.4. In aphorism 1.17 term 'asmitaa' is used for Egoism Cognitive Trance; in 2.3 and 2.6 it is used to denote affliction; in 3.47 it denotes the material cause of organs which is 'Egoism'. The meaning of 'asmitaa' in this aphorism requires deep logical thinking. In fact, the context here is - attainments are on account of birth, medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance. Yogi becomes able to create the specific position of the physical body in five ways. In the last two aphorisms - how the life-state change take place? is described. After receiving the life-state, a yogi is able to make specific changes to the physical body through the attainments of medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance, which is also clarified in our commentary on the last aphorism. So, it is possible to build up various levels of the physical body by more than two types, so, Seer Vyaasa said - "yogi built up the body of various levels" in the preface to this aphorism. The above five types of creation of body are the multiple levels of the physical body; it is not the creation of many bodies by yogi, for experiencing fruition of vehicle of actions - as said by Bhoja in his commentary. It has to be kept in mind, that neither Seer Patanjali nor Seer Vyaasa had described any attainment in the last chapter, in which the yogi is able to create a physical body by taking atoms of products of Matter. On the other hand, Seer Vyaasa had prescribed the limitation of emancipated Souls, in his Vedanta Philosophy. So, the yogi is able to create various levels of physical body for himself in the above ways ( = life-state, medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance) only, not otherwise.
When a yogi is able to create the specific levels of his body in the above ways, then what is the position of the level of knowledge (= mind) in the above levels of the body? From the Sanskrit root 'chiti sa.nGYaane' (Dhaatipaatha 1.32) one of the meanings of mind is 'knowledge'. Is the level of knowledge, in all the levels of physical bodies, is one, or is different? While replying to this question Seer Patanjali had said - 'nirmaaNa-chittani asmitaamaatraat' i.e., yogi creates various levels of knowledge by the self-ness form. It has to be kept in mind that Seer Patanjali had not used the term 'chitta-nirmaaNi' in the aphorism, the meaning of which is a creation of the mind, but used the term 'nirmaaNa-chittani' by which he meant for the creation of various levels of knowledge. Seer Vyaasa had also said - 'pa~nchavidham nirmaaNachittam janma-aushadhi-mantra-tapaH samaadhijaaH siddhaya iti' in his commentary to aphorism 4.6, i.e., created mental-level is five-fold since attainments are by birth, medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance. If he were meant for the creation of the mind from the material cause 'Egoism', then his above statement would be irrelevant. So, as the yogi is able to create the levels of the physical body in the five above-said ways, so, in the same way, he is also able to create specific levels of knowledge in the five ways. See, the term 'nirmaaNa-chittam' is also used by Seer Vyaasa in his commentary on aphorism 1.25 where the meaning of the term is 'self-made mental vehicle'. So, here different types of self-made mental levels are to be termed as multiple minds.
Asmitaa-maatra = State of self-ness:- The next question is - how this mental level is created? The reply to this question is 'asmitaa-maatraat' i.e., yogi creates the mental level by the state of self-ness. Here all the commentators have referred to 'Egoism' from the term 'asmitaa', which is against the context. When in this context, 'creation of mind from the material of Egoism' is not in question, then in such case 'Egoism' cannot be the meaning of 'asmitaa'. The term 'asmitaa-maatra' has been clarified by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 1.36 as - "tathaa.-asmitaayaam samaapannam chittam nistara.nga-mahodadhikalpam shaantam-anantam-asmitaamaatram bhavati i.e., similarly, the mind concentrating upon the notion of "asmitaa" = "I am" = that is the conscious form of soul, it becomes like a wave-less ocean, calm, infinite, pure egoism i.e., only realizing the conscious form of the soul". Swami Dayanand, on this aphorism, also said in Hugali debate - "This is my conscious form", when this knowledge appears in the mind, then the mind becomes a wave-less wide ocean and is present everywhere. So, the meaning of 'asmitaa-maatra' is self-ness or mind appearing in the form of the Soul.
Bhoja distinguished the meaning of 'Egoism' and 'asmitaa' in his commentary on aphorism 1.17, where he said that one should not consider 'Egoism' and 'asmitaa' as one, since both are different from each other. When the mind cognizes the objects with the modification 'I am' i.e., with ego, then it is 'Egoism'; and when leaving the external objects, with the internal logical thinking, and mind becoming latent to its material cause (=Matter), cognizes the conscious form of the Soul only, then is known as 'asmitaa'.
Similarly, for Egoistic Cognitive Trance, the term is used "ekaatmikaa samvit" which means knowledge of self = Soul only is 'asmitaa'. So, here the meaning of 'asmitaa-maatra' is self-ness form or mind appearing in the form of the Soul. Yogi creates five levels of knowledge = mind, like the creation of five types of bodies, by the above state of mind; and all these levels of mind (=knowledge) are controlled by one mind, which is explained in the next aphorism; and in the next aphorism 1.6, it is further said that level of mind created by trance is the best since it is free from vehicle = potencies.
So, from the above, it is clear that - as a yogi can create the level of his physical body in four ways in the present life-state, so, it is a description of the creation of five levels of mind = knowledge only.
