Component Word : pravRRittibhede prayojakam chittam ekam anekeShaam.
Sutra in English : pravRRittibhede prayojaka.m chittamekamanekeShaam.5.
Meaning in English : (ekam) One (chittam) mind (= material mind) is (prayojakam) controller of (pravritti-bhede) different activities = modifications = level of knowledge of (anekeShaam) those all created mental levels.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : bahuunaa.m chittaanaa.m kathamekachittaabhipraayapuraHsaraa pravRRittiriti sarvachittaanaa.m prayojaka.m chittameka.m nirmimiite. tataH pravRRittibhedaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (katham) How (pravrittiH) the modifications = activities (bahuunaam chittaanaam) of various created mental levels are (eka-chitta-abhipraaya-puraHsaraa iti) according to the implication of one mind? Yogi (nirmimiite) makes (ekam chittam) one material mind as (prayojakam) controller of (sarva-chittaanaam) all the created mental-levels. (tataH) By that one material mind alone (pravritti-bhedaH) there is a difference in the modifications of all those created mental levels.
Vedic Commentary in English : The knowledge level of various mental levels created by the yogi is different; so, there is a difference in their modifications = activities. How these different modifications are implicated by one mind? In fact, it is to be understood here that the creation of five types of minds, as above, are not material minds, but represent various levels of knowledge only. In the last aphorism, it is clarified that these five types of minds = mental levels are created by the self-ness form of the Soul since the creation of various levels of knowledge is not possible by any product of Matter. So, this is only and only Soul, that is referred to by the term 'asmitaamaatra' in the previous aphorism, who is capable of this work. The use of the term 'asmitaamaatra' for the Soul also clarifies the secret that the Soul has not achieved the state of existence in his own form; and the mind alone, which is in the form of the Soul, is capable of this work. It is also to be understood that when the Soul gets freed from the bonds of Matter, then he is not required to create any mental level at all. With regard to various mental levels, it is further clarified by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa that modifications of all these mental levels are being controlled by one materially existing mind only, and this way there is a difference in their knowledge levels and accordingly different types of modifications are being seen.
See, in the four types of creation of the physical body, the difference in the knowledge level is seen very clearly. When the physical body is perfected with the help of medicines, then the person thinks that I am now more healthy and can do more work, experience more enjoyment = objects, etc; by incantation i.e., by materially applying the rules = principles given in Vedas the knowledge level of the person increases, since knowledge level of a person who moves in the sky and on attained the powers of attenuation, etc. by application of rules as explained above, is much higher than that of a normal person, (in this regard examples of a material scientist who performs such researches = works can be seen); in the same way knowledge level of a person who attains the fulfillment of desires by purificatory action, is much higher and the yogi becomes capable of fulfilling his true desires.; and in the end, a yogi is able to destroy all the afflictions of mind by trance. All these types of modifications = activities with different knowledge levels are being controlled by the yogi, by his existing material mind which is part of the subtle body and associated with him since bondage.
The commentary of Bhoja on this aphorism is totally against the principles. It also appears that other commentators have given meaning based on his commentary. If a yogi is able to create various minds from the atoms of Egoism, then whether all those minds become part of his internal controlling system (termed as 'antah-karan' in Vedic scriptures)? or become part of the different internal controlling systems in different bodies? then in such a case who controls those different bodies? since one Soul cannot be present in all those bodies at the same time, as he is subtle in form.
We have already clarified above that the creation of various physical levels of the physical body through the change of life-state, by medicines, incantation, purificatory action, and trance, is the creation of various physical bodies; since the creation of the body from the atoms of gross objects is the part of fruition system of GOD, which does not come under the work-field of Soul. So, such a type of commentary on this and previous aphorism, by Bhoja and his followers, is wrong and against the principles described by Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa.
