Ancient seer Meaning in English : (iyam karmajaatiH) The class of acts is (khalu) certainly (chatuShpadii) of four types — (kriShNaa) the vicious act, (shukla-kriShNaa) the mixed-up act i.e., a mixture of vice and virtue, (shuklaa) the virtuous act, (cha) and (ashukla-akriShNaa iti) neither virtuous nor vicious.
(tatra) Of the four classes (kriShNaa) vicious is (duraatmanaam) of the wicked.
(shukla-kriShNaa) The mixed-up class of virtue and vice act is (bahiH-saadhana-saadhyaa) performed by external means; (tatra) in this type of act (karmaashaya-prachayaH) the vehicles of action are further accumulated in mind (para-piiDaa-anugraha-dvaareNa eva) by giving pain to other living beings or obliging them = becoming kindly to them.
(shuklaa) The virtuous acts are (tapaH-svaadhyaaya-dhyaana-vataam) of those who resort to purificatory action, the study of Vedas and scriptures prescribing salvation, and performing meditation, (hi) since (saa) this class of acts (aayattatvaat) is dependent upon (kevale manasi) the mind alone, and (abahiH-saadhanaadhiinaa) these being not performed by external means, so, (na bhavati) is not brought about (piiDayitvaa) by causing pain (paraan) to other living beings.
(ashukla-akriShNaa) The fourth class of act - neither virtuous nor vicious is (sa.nyaasinaam) of those who have renounced everything, (kShiiNa-kleshaanaam) whose afflictions have ceased to exist and (charama-dehaanaam iti) whose present body is the last one i.e., freed from worldly life. (tatra) In this type, (yoginaN) in the case of a yogi, (ashuklam) acts are devoid of virtue (phala-sa.nnyaasaat eva) since he gives up even the desire of fruits of acts; (cha) and (akriShNam) are devoid of vice since (anupaadaanaat) he does not perform the anti-scripture vicious acts.
(itareShaam tu bhuutaanaam) Of the other living being, other than a yogi, (trividham) it is of three descriptions (puurvam eva iti) as described above.
Vedic Commentary in English : Why the mind of a yogi is free from residual potencies = vehicles? Since acts of yogi are non-virtuous-non-vicious i.e., are devoid of virtue-vice. By the destruction of afflictions, and non-existence of defects of attachment and aversion, etc. in the mind, and even becoming desireless for fruits of acts, his acts which are as per scriptures, are also without the desire of fruits, so, his acts are non-virtuous; and by not adopting the acts which are against scriptures or not prescribed in scriptures, his acts are non-vicious i.e., devoid of vice. This category of acts is of yogi whose present body is the last one i.e., who have reached up to the state of Ultra-Cognitive Trance and have destroyed the nescience existing in mind and also brought his potencies in the state of burnt-up seeds.
There is the advice of renouncing virtue and vice, in the scriptures, for the yogi who wants to achieve cognizance of GOD —
tadaa vidvaan puNyapaape vidhuuya nira~njanaH paramam saamyamupaiti. (muNDaka-upaniShada 3.1.3)
i.e., at that time the intellectual who has cognized Soul, by renouncing both the virtue and vice, becomes pure = devoid of sorrow, illusion, attachment, aversion, etc., and achieves supreme equality.
Here the secret behind renouncing the virtue is that by experiencing the fruits of virtue, pains of consequence, anxiety, and habituation cannot end. Hence the acts of yogi are devoid of both virtue and vice. Seer Vyaasa had also advised the same in his Vedanta Philosophy as - "saamparaaye tartavyaabhaavaat-tathaa hi-anye" (3.3.27) i.e., on the abundance of virtue and vice, the Soul = cognisor intellectual has nothing to clear in the next world.
On the other hand, acts of other persons are virtuous, vicious, and mixed up. Because of this, the mind of all other persons is with residual potencies. In order to understand these three categories of acts, one has to clearly understand the definition of the act. Swami Dayanand said - "whatever effort has been performed by mind, organs or physical body is called 'act'. This is of three types i.e., virtue, vice and mixed-up." (Arya-uddeshyaratnamaalaa 48). Now we explain the three categories of acts as described by Seer Vyaasa —
1. Virtuous Act:- Seer Vyaasa said that acts of purificatory action, the study of Vedas, and the performance of meditation are virtuous acts. The reason for this is that these acts are performed through the mind alone, and are not dependent upon external means, hence these are not performed by causing pain to other living beings. It means that mental acts which are as per Vedic advice, alone are virtuous acts, since these need not be performed by external physical means, and as such these do not directly or indirectly result in pain to other living beings.
Query:- Are acts performed by the physical body not totally virtuous acts? However, there is clear advice of virtuous physical and verbal acts in the scriptures, such as there are instructions to perform Vedic Yajna which are termed as duties for human beings. In the same way, it can be said about the acts of benevolence for others. So, under such circumstances only accepting mental acts as virtuous acts does not appear to be correct as per Vedic scriptures.
Solution:- The reasons given by Seer Vyaasa for classifying mental acts as virtuous acts, clarify this secret — (1) since these acts are performed by the mind only, so, there is no harm and wrong modification for other living beings; and (2) since these acts are not dependent on external means, so, no pain is caused to other living beings. Now refer to Manusmriti with regard to violence —
pa~ncha suunaa grihasthasya chullii peShaNyupaskaraH.
kaNDanii cha udakumbhaH cha badhyate yaastu vaahayan. Manu 3.68.
i.e., there are five places of violence for the householder - fire-place (for cooking), grinding mill, broom, mortar, and water jar; by using these a householder gets bound with the vice of violence.
Even using the necessities for a normal life, violence automatically takes place. In such case, the classification given by Seer Vyaasa is as per the scriptures, that totally virtuous acts are those only which are performed by the mind. Here this has to be kept in mind that Seer Vyaasa had explained this conception on the basis of the accumulation of vehicle of actions in mind. As regards the acts and Yaagas like agnihotra, prescribed as duties in the Vedic scriptures, these come under the category of mixed-up acts, since the material used for performing Yaaga (specifically agnihotra) is produced through agriculture = cultivation; and agriculture-work is mixed-up acts since violence takes places towards various living beings existing in the agriculture land, but on the other hand, it is for generating food for the other living beings and human beings. So, in spite of the defect of indirect violence in performing agnihotra, it is for the benevolence of living beings, hence the various seers have prescribed this agnihotra as a daily duty for every human in the scriptures.
2. Mixed-up Act:- Seer Vyaasa said that acts performed by external means are of the mixed-up category. In this category vehicle of actions is accumulated by giving pain to other living beings or obliging them. Acts performed by external means are the acts performed with the help of external material objects and other living beings and acts to attain the external objects with the help of external physical organs. These acts are vicious on account of causing pain to other living beings, and also virtue is accumulated to the extent of the well-being of others = i.e., providing pleasure for other living beings. Seer Vyaasa had described the causing of pain and obliging others with reference to the pain of anxiety in the commentary to aphorism 2.15. In this way, the acts which are prescribed in the Vedic scriptures such as agriculture, profession, foods, Vedic Yaagas = yajna like agnihotra, creating means for the well-being of humans / living beings, are to be considered of mixed-up category. In the same way, the invention of various medicines in modern times for the well-being of humans is to be considered of mixed-up category, since these inventions are done by causing violence to animal beings.
In this way, we see that the use of external means causes pain to other living beings, either directly or indirectly, hence acts performed by external means will either come in the mixed-up category or in the vicious category. If acts are as per the scriptures and are meant to provide well-being = pleasure to other living beings, in any way, then such acts will come in the mixed-up category otherwise these will be vicious only.
Query:- You have categorized Vedic Yajna in the mixed-up category; however, these are prescribed for humans in the Vedic scriptures. Even Yajna is prescribed as a duty act for every human being. Swami Dayanand had prescribed 5 Yajna as a duty for humans. In Shatapatha Brahmana also it is said that "yaGYo vai shreShThatamam karma" (shatapatha 1.7.1.5) i.e., Yajna is the best act. In the same, there is clear advice for performing Yajna to achieve heaven. There is a clear description of various Yajnas for various types of rituals in Grihyasutras. There is a clear description of Yajna - from agnihotra to Ashvamedha in Shrautasutras. In such a state, declaring Yajna as a mixed-up act does not seem to be correct.
Solution:- We had declared Yaagas not Yajna in the mixed-up category, by which we are meant for various types of agnihotras prescribed in Grihyasutras and Shrautasutras and are performed by physical materials. On the other hand, Yajnas include various activities which also include Yaagas (agnihotras). In the various scriptures, various material Yaagas are prescribed for human beings, and these are termed Yajna. The term Yajna is derived from the Sanskrit root "yaj" which means the act, which is named as knowledge and yoga, born from true-scriptures, virtuous performance, and association of intellectuals known as Yajna (Ref - meaning given on Rigveda 1.1.1 by Swami Dayanand Saraswati). Here from the point of view of human acts, material Yaagas (agnihotras) are to be taken as mixed-up acts. However, the wider meaning of Yajna, as shown above, comes in the category of virtuous acts. Even Swami Dayanand Saraswati had not shown the only meaning of agnihotra (material yaaga) from the term Yajna, he had shown wider meanings of it in Vedas which includes all types of knowledge, the welfare of living beings, yoga for the achievement of GOD, the performance of virtue, adoption, and performance of truth, and worship, etc. (Detailed testimonies are given in our Hindi translation).
Seer Vyaasa explains the type of acts in the chapter of Salvation of Yoga philosophy, where it describes which type of acts are required to be performed by a yogi to achieve salvation, and which type of acts keep him bonded in the life-cycle. It is also to be understood that true knowledge alone is described as a means of salvation in the Vedic scriptures. As - "tameva viditvaati-mritumeti" (Yajurveda 31.18) i.e., one achieves salvation by cognizing GOD; "GYaanat-muktiH" (Saankhya Philosophy 3.23) knowledge = discriminative knowledge is the mean of salvation. On the other hand, Yaaga = Agnihotras = Fire-oblations are not described as a means of salvation in any Vedic scripture. In the same way, Swami Dayanand Saraswati had not listed Agnihotra as a means of salvation in chapter 9 of Light of Truth, and it has not been described as a means of salvation in the chapter of Worship in Rigvedaadibhaashya-bhuumika. In this regard, Seer Kapila declares in Saankhya Philosophy as — "itaralaabhe-api-aavrittiH pa~nchaagni-yogato janmashruteH" (Saankhaya Philosophy 4.22) i.e., even after achieving higher (intellectual) states of birth by the performance of Agnihotras, one has to return to the vicious life-cycle. Similarly, there is a description of coming back in the life-cycle from the path of pitriyaana in the Panchagnividya of Chaandogya-upaniShada 5.4.1-5.8.2.
In the same way, it is explained in Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada 6.2.16 - "atha ye yaGYena daanena tapasaa lokaa~njayanti te dhuumam-abhi-sambhavanti...." i.e., the path of pitriyaana is achieved by the performance of Yajna (= agnihotra = Fire-oblation), donation and purificatory action, etc. And in the same way, it is described in Chaandogya-upaniShada as —
atha ya ime graamam iShTaapuurtte dattam-iti-upaasate te dhuumam-abhi-sambhavanti.... (5.10.3)
i.e., those who perform the acts for the welfare of other living beings i.e., creation of pond, well, garden, etc. by donation, perform agnihotra, etc. move on the path of pritiyaana after departing from his body. On the path of pritiyaana, they achieve the higher (intellectual) states of birth enjoy pleasure in those life-states, and have to come back in the life-cycle again as per the fruition system of GOD. The path of pritiyaana is different from the path of devayaana = the path of salvation.
From the above testimonies, it is clear that the performance of Yaagas is not a means of salvation. Further, it is not the only useful act for the discriminative yogi. Even Seer Manu is also of the same view, as he had not prescribed the performance of agnihotra as a duty for the anchorite who has renounced the world, in the Manusmriti 6.38 and 6.43.
So, on the basis of the above testimonies, Vedic yaaga (= agnihotras, material yajnas) are not to be considered as purely virtuous acts but are to be treated as mixed-up acts.
3. Vicious Acts:- Seer Vyaasa said that this category is of the wicked. Nothing more had been said in this regard. Those acts which are not coming in the category of virtuous or mixed-up acts are to be said as vicious acts. In fact, all the mental, verbal, and physical acts that are against the Vedic scriptures; causing pain to other living beings; not advised in the scriptures; and restrained in the scriptures are in this category. We have explained vehicles of action from aversion, illusion, and violence in our commentary to aphorism 2.15, all these acts are in this category of acts. In the same way, vicious acts of mind, speech, and body are explained in Manusmriti as below:-
paradravyeShvabhidhyaanam manasaaniShTachintanam.
vitathaabhiniveshashcha trividham karma maanasam.
paaruShyamanritam chaiva paishunam chaapi sarvashaH.
asambaddhapralaapaH-cha vaa~Ngmayam syaatchaturvidham.
adattanaamupaadanam hi.nsaa chaivaavidhaanataH.
paradaaropasevaa cha shaariiram trividham smritam. Manu 12.5-7.
There are three vicious acts of mind — (1) thinking of theft of other's property, (2) having evil thinking, aversion, or jealousy about others, and (3) making a wrong decision. There are four vicious acts of speech — (1) speaking hard, (2) speaking false = untrue, (3) back-biting / speaking ill, and (4) speaking unrelated things (intentionally) and/or blaming to avoid facts. There are three vicious acts of the body — (1) performing theft, (2) doing violence, and (3) adultery - having physical relations with someone other than one's wife/husband.
All these acts and acts which are against the Vedic scriptures or not prescribed in the scriptures are to be taken as vicious acts only.
Seer Manu had given the acts which are required for salvation are —
yathoktaanyapi karmaaNi parihaaya dvijottamaH.
aatmaGYaane shame cha syaat-vedabhyaase cha yatnavaan.
etaddhi janmasaaphalyam braahmaNasya visheShataH.
praapyaitatkritakrityo hi dvijo bhavati naanyathaa. Manu 12.92-93.
The anchorite = intellectual, even after avoiding the performance of prescribed agnihotra, etc., should put efforts for cognizance of GOD, control of senses, and study of Vedas in all circumstances. These three acts help the intellectual to achieve the purpose of life for himself. There is no other way to achieve success in life.
The acts of purificatory action, the study of Vedas and scripture prescribing salvation, and performing meditation, as prescribed by Seer Vyaasa in this aphorism, are the same as prescribed by Seer Manu above; and yogi should perform these acts as a duty and without having any desire of fruits of these.
From the above, it is clear that yogi should avoid the three categories of acts and adopt the fourth category i.e., neither virtuous nor vicious acts, otherwise his mind will accumulate potencies which will keep him in the vicious life-cycle and he will not be able to achieve salvation.
