Ancient seer Meaning in English : (vriSha-da.nsha-vipaaka-udayaH) Rise of fruition of virtue-vice acts (svavya~njakaa~njana-abhivyaktaH) on the manifestation of its cause. (yadi) Even if (saH) that vehicle of action (vyavahitaH) is separated = interrupted by (jaati-shatena vaa) hundreds of life-states, or (duura-deshatayaa vaa) distance in place, or (kalpa-shatena vaa) hundreds of creation-times (= Kalpa) (cha) and that (punaH) again (vyajyeta) will manifest (draagityeva) immediately (svavya~njakaa~njanaH udiyaat eva) by the operation of its own appropriate cause, (upaadaaya) by taking up (vaasanaaH) the residual potencies (puurva-anubhuuta-vriSha-da.nsha-vipaaka-abhisa.nskritaaH) which were present in mind on account of the experience of fruits of virtue-vice acts in some previous life-state. (kasmaat) Why? (yataH) Because even if it is (vyavahitaanaam) interrupted by life-state, place, and time (api) also (sadrisham karma) the same type of act (nimittii-bhuutam) becomes a cause of (abhivya~njakam) manifestation (aasaam) of these vehicles; (iti) so, (aanantaryam eva) there is sequential proximity of the vehicles.
(kutaH cha) And why does it so, happen? Because (smriti-sa.nskaarayoH eka-ruupatvaat) there is uniformity of memory and residual potencies. (yatha) As are (anubhavaaH) the experiences (tathaa) such are (sa.nskaaraaH) the residual potencies; (cha) and (te) these residual potencies, are (karma-vaasanaa-anuruupaaH) as per the nature of vehicles = residua of actions. (cha) And (yathaa) as is (vaasanaaH) the residua = vehicles, (tathaa) such is (smritiH) the memory (= i.e., memory is similar to that of residua = vehicles). (iti) Therefore (smirtiH) memory takes place (sa.nskaarebhyaH) by residual potencies (jaati-desha-kaala-vyavahitebhyaH) interrupted by life-state, place, and time; (cha) and (smriteH) from memory (punaH) again (sa.nskaaraaH) residual potencies are generated. (iti evam) In this way (ete) these (smriti-sa.nskaaraaH) memory and residual potencies (vyajyante) are manifested (karmaashaya-vritti-laabha-vashaat) by virtue of fruition of vehicles of actions. (cha) And (ataH) thus (vyavahitaanaam api) even though interrupted by life-state, place and time also, (aanantaryam eva) the sequential proximity alone (siddham) is proved, (nimitta-naimittika-bhaava-anuchchhedaat iti) since the relation of cause and effect does not break.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, it was explained that whichever life-state is got by the Soul on the basis of his vehicle of actions, the potencies accumulated in that type of previous life-states, get manifested in the present life-state. This is further explained by Seer Patanjali by saying that even though such potencies had accumulated in the life-state achieved before the hundreds of births from the present birth, i.e., there are hundreds of other life-states between the two human life-states, even then those potencies of previous human life-state get manifested; in the same way, those potencies were accumulated in another place i.e., the previous human life-state had taken place at any other place than the present place, even then those potencies get manifested; and in the same way, even if there is interruption of any time between the two human life-states, for this Seer Vyaasa said - "separated by hundred of creation times", even then those potencies get manifested in the present birth.
This system is clarified by Seer Vyaasa by saying that the vehicle of action which manifests the fruition of life-state, lifetime, and experience, gets manifested when its appropriate cause becomes available. Whenever that vehicle of actions, without the limits of life-state, place, or time, gets its operative cause for manifestation, then it gets manifested along with the previously experienced potencies. The reason for this is that the same type of act is the cause of the manifestation of these potencies. So, the distance of life-state, place, and time does not become interruption in the manifestation of potencies; and in the present birth for the Soul, the same type of potencies accumulated in the similar life-state get manifested in the mind. Why does this happen? For this Seer Patanjali replied - "smriti-sa.nskaarayoH ekaruupatvaat" = since memory and residual potencies are of the same form.
The generation of potencies in the mind, for the Soul, is according to the experience of pleasure and pain received on the fruition of one's vehicle of action in the form of life-state, lifetime, and experiences. So, these potencies are according to the residua of actions. And the memory is also of the type of residua = vehicles. It means that potencies and memory are according to the vehicles of actions; so, potencies and memories are said to be of the same form on account of their same cause. For this reason, even interrupted by life-state, time, and place, memory is generated from the residual potencies which are according to the vehicle of actions; and potencies are again generated from the memory. In this way, the cycle of potencies-memories-potencies moves on. Both these, potencies and memory, get manifested in the mind of the Soul on the fruition of vehicle of action, as per the system of GOD. There is sequential proximity of these, even interrupted by life-state, place, and time, on receiving the same type of life-state again.
The strongest example of interruption of time is seen in the life-state received after returning from salvation. When the Soul gets the life-state of a human being after the 36000 creation times, the time of salvation, then at that time the same type of potencies and memories get manifested which were accumulated = generated in life-state of that human being before achieving salvation. And after that life-state when he goes to another type of life-states according to his un-fruited accumulated and generated vehicle of actions, the same type of potencies and memories get manifested which are according to that life-state. So, the manifestation of the same type of potencies and memories in the various life-states that are received the first time after salvation, proves that there is the existence of all types of potencies and memories of all types of life-states, in the mind, which were accumulated before salvation. So, interruption of salvation time does not destroy the sequential proximity of these potencies.
In this regard Bhoja had further clarified that there is a generation of memory from potencies, from memory, there is an experience of pleasure-pain, and from that experience of pleasure-pain there is a generation of potencies, and in this way, the Soul remains bonded in the strong and complicated net of the vehicle of actions.
In the last aphorism, we had given the examples of a dog and a newly born child of a turtle. Now if some Soul got the life-state of a dog in his present birth, then even if he got the birth of a dog last time before one thousand other life-states, even if he got the life-state of birth at some other place or even at some other planet, even if he got the life-state of a dog long back = thousands of years, or creations before the present birth, even then the potencies which were generated according to life-state, lifetime, and experience in that birth of dog, those potencies and memories will get manifested in the present birth. And that Soul, being in the body of a dog, will perform the same type of acts as if it were performed in his last birth only i.e., barking, eating raw flesh, sucking of bones, faithfulness to his owner, putting efforts to save himself from other strong animals will be done in a natural way without any training. In the same way, it can be understood in the case of newly born children of a turtle near the seashore, who run towards the sea to save their lives from other animals who want to eat them.
But on receiving the life-state of human beings, there is a difference. This human life-state is of dual nature - act and experience life-state; whereas other life-states are mainly for the experience of pleasure and pain according to one's vehicle of actions. In the experience life-states the life moves according to the accumulated potencies existing in the mind; and in the case of the act-full life-state of a human, the Soul has the freedom to perform new acts. It means that even on the manifestation of potencies and memories according to accumulated residua in the birth of human-being, the Soul has one important mean functioning in his subtle body which is called as mind (= the instrument to decide) to improve his present life, and has the opportunities for acquiring knowledge. In this way, the Soul can improve or fall down in the present life by his new acts, which may be against the manifested potencies; or may live the normal life as per his accumulated potencies and strengthen his afflicted vehicle of actions and get more deeply involved in the vicious life-cycle. For improvement and deterioration Seer Vyaasa gave the example of Nandiishvara and Nuhusha in his commentary, which are explained in the aphorisms 2.1, 2.13, and 4.3 above.
