Ancient seer Meaning in English : (aashiShaH nityatvaat) Since the desire to live is eternal, so, (taasaam vaasanaanaam) those vehicles = residua are (anaaditvam) proved as beginning-less. (yaa iyam aatmaashiiH) The desire about the self — (maa na bhuuvam bhuuyaasam iti) "Would that I may not cease to be" or "I may always live on" (sarvasya drishyate) is seen in all living beings; (saa) this desire of self-benediction (na) is not (svaabhaavikii) inherent. (kasmaat) Why is it so? (katham) How (bhavet) there could be (maraNatraasaH) fear of death (duHkha-anusmriti-nimittaH) which can only be caused by remembrance of experience of such pain, and (dveShaH) aversion for such pain, (jaatamaatrasya jantoH) to any just born living being who (ananubhuuta-maraNa-dharmakasya) has not experienced the pain of a death in the present life? (cha) And (svaabhaavikam vastu) inherent object/subject (na) does not (upaadatte) require (nimittam) cause for manifestation. (tasmaat) Therefore (idam) this (chittam) mind, (anaadi-vaasanaa-anuviddham) which is possessed with residua = vehicles since eternity, (upaavarttate) becomes active, (bhogaaya) for the experience (puruShasya) of the Soul, (pratilabhya) by manifesting (kaashchit vaasanaaH) certain residua = vehicles (nimitta-vashaat) by operation of incidental cause (eva iti) only.
(apare pratipannaaH) Some philosophers believe that (chittam) the mind (shariira-parimaaNa-aakaara-maatram) is of the form = size which commensurate with the body with which it is connected, (sa.nkocha-vikaasi) and contracts or expands with the body, (ghata-praasaada-pradiipa-kalpam iti) just like a lamp placed in a jar or a house. (cha) And (tathaa) by believing so, they say (antara-abhaavaH) there is no interruption (while taking birth in another type of body), (cha) and thereby (sa.nsaaraH) creation cycle = life-death-life-cycle (yuktaH iti) remains active. (aachaaryaH) The author, Seer Patanjali, holds that (vrittiH) the modification of (asya) this (vibhunaH chittasya) specific mind, which is related to all the sense organs, (eva) alone (sa~Nkocha-vikaasini iti) expands or contracts. (cha) And (tat) the mind (dharmaadi-nimittaapekSham) stands in need of cause of virtue and vice for such contraction and expansion activities.
(cha) And (nimittam) these incidental causes (dvividham) are two-fold — i.e., (baahyam) external, (cha) and (aadhyaatmikam) self-regulated = internal. The causes (shariiraadi-saadhanaapekSham) stand in need of body etc. as instruments (stuti-daana-abhivaadanaadi) such as praising, donating, and respecting performing obeisance, etc., are (baahyam) external; and those (chitta-maatra-adhiinam) performed by mind alone (shraddhaadiH) such as faith in truth, etc. are (aadhyaatmikam) internal. (cha) And (tathaa uktam) so, it has been said — (cha ye ete) And the (vihaaraaH) modifications of the mind (maitryaadayaH) such as friendliness, etc. (dhyaayinaam) performed by the yogi, practicing meditation, (te baahya-saadhana-niranugrahaatmaanaH) these do not depend on the external means in the form of body, etc., (abhinirvartayanti) generates the (prakriShTam dharmam) superior state of virtue.
(tayoH) Of these two, external and internal (= self-regulated) means, (maanasam) performed through the mind alone (baliiyaH) are more powerful. (katham) How? Can (j~naana-vairaagye) the knowledge and desirelessness (atishayyete) be overpowered (kena) by any external means? (i.e., nothing can excel knowledge and desirelessness). Examples in this regard are (cha) and (kaH) who (utsaheta) can attempt (karttum) to render (daNDakaaraNyam) Dandaka forest (shuunyam) empty (shaariireNa karmaNaa) by physical acts only (chitta-bala-vyatirekeNa) without the power of mind? (vaa) Or who (pibet) can drink (samudram) ocean (agastyavat) like the Seer Agastya?
Vedic Commentary in English : On receiving the same type of life-state by the Soul, potencies according to that life-state, though interrupted by life-state, place, and time, get manifested as if these are accumulated in the last birth only. In this regard, Bhoja had raised a question that "when it is a first experience for the Soul, then the experience is on the basis of potencies or without any incidental cause?" And if for the first experience, in the absence of previous experience and related potencies, potencies are not the incidental cause, then why these are required to be accepted for further experiences in life? This position takes place in the case of every first birth of a particular life-state after the start of creation.
In this regard, Seer Patanjali said that since the desire of the Soul is eternal, so, the potencies are beginning-less. Desire is the quality of the conscious Soul, and the Soul always has a desire for his well-being; and on this ground vehicle of action and potencies generated from the vehicle of action are proved as beginning-less. In fact, the manifestation of potencies in any particular life-state, which had been achieved for the first time after the beginning of creation, proves the generation of potencies in the births that have taken place in previous creations. Seer Vyaasa said that the desire for self i.e., "Would that I may not cease to be" equally exists = available in all living beings. It means after getting birth in any physical body, the Soul wishes to remain in that body = wanting to escape from death, and this desire is not natural and takes place on having some incidental cause. Since any living being, who had just been born, should not have the fear of death if he had not experienced the pain = fear of death previously. Without the experience of death, how the memory of the pain of death and aversion to the cause of death can take place in the mind of that living being? The example of newly born turtle children, given in the previous aphorism, proves this position. Since fear of death manifests on account of some cause, not naturally, so, this fear of death cannot be accepted as natural. If fear of death is natural, then it should be there at all times, not only on having any cause of death. So, as that newly born turtle child had experienced the pain of death in his last birth when was born as a turtle, the manifestation of that potency alone, in his mind, forced him to run toward the sea in order to save himself from the flesh-eating animals present there; and that turtle when reaches in the sea, then his fear of death, which had arisen from those animals present at the sea-shore, ends and he starts swimming in the sea-water. Now he has a fear of death from those animals who can eat him in the sea. So, with the change of cause the level of fear of death also changes, and in the absence of any cause, there is no fear of death. On account of these reasons, potencies are proved as beginningless by the flow.
So, this mind with eternal potencies provides experiences to the Soul on getting birth in a particular body, by manifesting potencies according to that body. Here this is to be understood that manifestation of potencies according to a particular body takes place as the fruition system of GOD only, since the inanimate object does not have any such power.
How is the mind, and how does it work? based on which the potencies get manifested and make the Soul have the experience. In this regard, some philosophers believe that it contracts and expands with the body. As the light of the lamp gets contracted or expanded in the room available, so, this mind also gets contracted or expanded according to the size of the body. It means that it becomes the size of the body, i.e., it becomes small in the body of a mosquito and large in the body of an elephant. In this way, there is no problem with the movement of the mind in various types of bodies, and this life-cycle moves on. The defect in this conception is that in such case the mind will be in contact with all the five sense organs at the same time, and with the result, there should be a generation of multiple knowledge(s) from multiple sense organs at one (= same) time, which is against the reality. So, accepting the mind as that of the size of the body is wrong.
On the other hand, Seer Patanjali had declared the mind as "vibhuH" (the Sanskrit word), as per the school of Seer Patanjali, its modifications only contract or expand. While writing on "vibhuH" various philosophers had given the meaning "omnipresent". But it is also not correct, since the meaning of "vibhuH" here is "specific mind, which is related to all sense organs" (the meaning is based on the Sanskrit grammar, i.e., root "bhuH" is preceded by the adjective "vi"). So, the mind has special properties as compared to other sense organs and has the capacity to contact all the sense organs and make available the knowledge (of subjects = objects) acquired by sense-organs to the upper level which reaches up to the Soul who experiences such knowledge. On account of such capacities only, the mind is said as "vibhuH". If the meaning of "vibhuH" is accepted as omnipresent, then it will be against the inner testimony of the Yoga-philosophy of Seer Patanjali and other scriptures, as —
1. bandhakaaraNa-shaithilyaat prachaarasamvedanaat-cha chittasya para-shariiraaveshaH. 3.38.
In this attainment, Seer Patanjali had accepted the movement of the mind from one body to another body. If the mind is accepted as omnipresent then such type of movement is not possible.
2. hridaye chittasamvit. 3.34.
In the commentary on this aphorism, it is proved, on the basis of various testimonies, that the mind exists in the heart. So, how can an organ be omnipresent, which exists in one part of the body?
3. tadabhaavaadaNuH manaH. VaisheShika-philosophy 7.1.25.
Here the mind is said as an atom as compared to the sky.
4. Seer Gautam had also accepted the mind as an atom —
kramavrittitvtaadayugapad-grahaNam. Nyaaya-philosophy 3.2.6.
While writing a commentary on this aphorism Seer Vaatsyaayan wrote - "avibhu chaikam manaH paryaayaNendriyaiH samyujyata iti" i.e., mind get contact with the sense organs in succession not in conjunction, so, the mind is like an atom. If the mind is omnipresent then there should be multiple knowledge(s) at one time. But this is against reality.
5. aNupariNaamam tatkriti shruteH. Saankhya-philosophy 3.14.
The generation of mind is established as per testimony, and that is of the size of an atom. And
na vyaapakatvam manasaH karaNatvaadindriyamatvaadvaa aasyaadivat-chakShuraadivat. Saankhya-philosophy 5.69.
Any organ can exist in one place just like the organs of the eyes etc., not omnipresent. So, the omnipresence of the mind is not possible. And again —
sakriyatvaad gatishruteH. Saankhya-philosophy 5.70.
There is a description of the movement of the mind in Vedic literature. So, the mind cannot be omnipresent.
If the mind is said as omnipresent in the body, then this conception is the same as that of other philosophers as discussed above by Seer Vyaasa in this aphorism. So, as per the inner testimony of Yoga and other Vedic scriptures, the mind is of the size of an atom only, not omnipresent. So, in this regard meaning of "vibhuH" is - (mind is having) "special properties" is correct.
The modifications of this atom-sized "mind" are of the nature of contraction and expansion. The contraction and expansion of modifications of the mind depend upon the incidental causes of virtue and vice. The acts of praising, donating, and respecting (virtuous acts in nature), etc. which are performed with the help of the body and external organs are known as external causes. In the same way, the vicious acts that are performed through the body and organs are also to known as external. On the other hand, virtue and vice which are performed by the mind alone are called self-regulatory = internal. So, the act of faith in truth, friendliness, and kindness performed by the yogi through the mind alone, generates a super state of virtue. In this regard, the acts of purificatory action, the study of Vedic scriptures, and meditation, as prescribed by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 4.7 can be classified as totally virtuous acts, which confirm the superiority of these acts. In the same way, acts of vice, nescience, desire fullness, etc. are also internal causes that are performed by the mind and keep the Soul bonded to the life-cycle more firmly.
So, Seer Vyaasa said that out of the external and internal incidental causes, one performed by the mind which is self-regulatory in nature is stronger = more powerful. The reason for their powerfulness is that the knowledge and desirelessness generated in the mind cannot be overpowered by external causes. External causes can create disturbance for the time being, but they cannot totally excel the knowledge and desirelessness. In this regard, he had given the example that without the power of the mind, who can attempt to render the daNDaka forest empty by physical act only? or who can drink the ocean like the Seer Agastya? In both examples, the importance of the power of the mind is shown. In the first case, Lord Rama had got the forest daNDaka empty from those wicked persons (named khara-duushaNa, etc. who had physical power only) with the help of his mental power along with the physical power. In the second example, there is a reference to the drinking of ocean water by Seer Agastya. In fact, this is not a case of drinking of physical oceans available on the earth, which is wrongly interpreted by most of the commentators. The secret of this example can be understood with reference to the testimony of shatapatha brahamaNa which is as follows —
mano vai samudraH. shatpatha 7.5.2.52.
i.e., the mind is an ocean. It means that Seer Agastya had drunk the whole water of the ocean = i.e., all modification of mind (= ocean) with three steps of true knowledge, true acts, and true communion; and such mind exists as pure like the Soul. This act also cannot be performed by the physical act, this is possible by the mental power alone. So, the internal self-regulatory incidental causes are said as powerful.
The devotee is to understand that out of physical, verbal, and mental acts, acts performed by the mind are maximum in number. Any act starts from the mind alone, after that its performance is possible by words or by the physical body, or by both means. If the devotee can control his mental acts, then he can achieve the state of restraint of modifications. So, for this reason also self-regulatory incidental causes are said as powerful as compared to external causes. By knowing this secret, a devotee has to reduce/contract his modifications of vice-ignorance-desire-full-ness and expand the modifications of virtue-knowledge-desireless-ness.
