Sutra in English : hetuphalaashrayaalambanaiH sa.mgRRihiitatvaadeShaamabhaave tadabhaavaH.11.
Meaning in English : (sa.ngrihiitatvaat) Collection of residua = vehicles are (hetu-phala-aashraya-aalambanaiH) by cause, motive, substratum, and object; and (abhaave) on the disappearance of (eShaam) the four means i.e., cause, motive, substratum, and object (tat-abhaavaH) the residua = vehicles are disappeared.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (hetuH) Cause for the residua is explained as — Soul gets (sukham) pleasure (dharmaat) by the performance of virtue, and (duHkham) pain (adharmaat) by the performance of vice. (sukhaat) On experiencing pleasure (raagaH) there is an attachment towards pleasure and its means = objects, and (duHkhaat) on experiencing pain (dveShaH) there is an aversion towards pain and its means. (cha) And (tataH) by that attachment and aversion, (prayatnaH) there is an effort. (tena) By that effort, (parispandamaanaH) an action (manasaa vaachaa kaayena vaa) by mind, speech, and body, one (anugrihNaati) favor (param) other living beings (vaa) or (upahanti) are cause injuries or losses to them. (tataH) By obliging or violating others, (punaH) again there is (dharma-adharmau) collection of virtue and vice, and therefrom (sukha-duHkhe) pleasure and pain, and that again results in (raaga-dveshau) attachment and aversion. (iti) In this way, even from eternity (idam) this (ShaDaram) six-spooked (sa.nsaara-chakram) wheel of the world (pravrittam) is revolving. (cha) And (netrii) driver of (asya) this (pratikShaNam aavartta-maanasya) regular revolving wheel of the world, is (avidyaa) “nescience”, which is (muulam) root of (sarva-kleshaanaam) all afflictions. (iti) Therefore (eShaH) this nescience is (hetuH) cause of residua = vehicles.
(phalam) Motive or fruit, (tu) however, is (yam aashritya) that basing on (yasya) which (dharmaadeH) appropriate virtue, etc. (pratyupannataa) are performed in present (= manifested); (hi) since (na) there is no (apuurva-upajanaH) non-sequential manifestation.
(aashrayaH) The substratum (vaasanaanaam) of residua = vehicles are, (tu) however, (manaH) mind (saadhikaaram) which has yet to perform its duty. (hi) Since (vaasanaaH) residua = vehicles (sthaatum na utsahante) cannot exist (avasitaadhikaare manasi) in a mind which has fulfilled its duties, hence (niraashrayaaH) become substratum-less.
(vastu) The substance, (yad) which (abhimukhiibhuutam) placed in contact, (vyanakti) manifests (yaam vaasanaam) the particular residua = vehicle, (tat) that is (aalambanam) object of (tasyaaH) that residua.
(evam) In this way (sarvaaH vaasanaaH) all the residua are (sa~NgrihiitaaH) accumulated (etaiH) by these (hetu-phala-aashraya-aalambanaiH) cause, motive, substratum, and objects. (eShaam abhaave) When these four means cease to exist, (vaasanaanaam) the residua = vehicles (tat sa.nshrayaaNaam) which depend on these for existence, (api) also (abhaavaH) disappear.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism the potencies, which get manifested in the mind according to every life-state, are proved as eternal by the flow. Till the mind exists with the net of potencies, it keeps on providing the experiences to the Soul as per the fruition system of GOD. In such a state, till the existence of an authoritative mind, achievement of salvation is not possible for the Soul. So, there should be some remedy to end these eternal potencies, otherwise, freedom from this life-cycle will not be possible.
Seer Patanjali said that these potencies are on account of incidental causes; and when those reasons will not exist, then the potencies also will not exist. This alone is the means for the disappearance of potencies. The potencies in the mind of the Soul accumulate on account of cause, motive, substratum, and object.
1. Cause:- Seer Vyaasa said that Soul gets pleasure by the performance of virtue and pain by the performance of vice. On having pleasure, one has attachment, in his mind, for the pleasure and its means, i.e., he wants to experience these again; on having pain, one has an aversion towards pain and its means, so, he does not want to experience it again. On account of the attachment and aversion, there is an effort. So, with his mental, verbal, or physical acts, one either favors other living beings or causes injuries to them. It means on account of attachment toward pleasure and means of pleasure, one favors those who are helping to achieve those means of pleasure, and disfavors and causes harm to those who become obstacles in achieving those means of pleasure, and also wants to keep these means safe for his experience. In the same way on account of aversion towards pain and its means, one performs violence or causes harm to those who make us achieve those means of pain, and even become favorable to those who help us to remain away from those means of pain, and want to keep himself away from any pain and its means. In this way, such efforts of obliging and violating once again accumulate virtue and vice. And in this way, the vicious six-spooked wheel of the world in the form of virtue-vice — attachment-aversion — favor-disfavor to others keeps on moving. The main cause of this life-cycle is nescience, which has been explained in aphorism 2.5 above. This nescience is the primary cause to keep on moving the life-cycle for the Soul, and this alone is the cause of the generation of residual potencies.
2. Motive:- Motive is that based on which virtue and vice get generated; i.e., the object for which one performs good or bad acts in his life, that object is the motive. On the basis of that motive, there is a generation of virtue and vice which get accumulated in the mind as a potency. So, the "worldly or scriptural objects/enjoyments" are the second means of generation of potencies, for which all types of virtuous and vicious acts are performed.
3. Substratum: The authoritative mind is said as a substratum of potencies. Till the mind has fulfilled its duties, till then potencies get generated in it on account of modifications of Qualities. Seer Vyaasa had given the property of mind, in his explanation of aphorism 2.15, as - "chalam-cha guNavrittam-iti kShipapariNaami chittam-uktam" which means that the functioning of Qualities is highly changeable, so, the mind is said to have a nature of changing quality. In this way, potencies get generated on the basis of a changeable mind. When the mind has fulfilled its duty = exists without the functioning of Qualities, then it exists as pure like the Soul (Ref - Vyaasa commentary on 1.5), and in such a mind, potencies do not get generated.
4. Object:- The substance or subject which makes the manifestation of potency in the mind, by becoming present, is called the object of that potency = residua. The related potencies, which are already present in the mind, get manifested in a natural way whenever the concerned subject or substance becomes available; and as a result, the related modifications and history of the substance/subject also become available to the Soul. In this way on the manifestation of previous potencies on the basis of the object, new potencies also get generated in the mind.
In this way, there are four reasons, as above, for the accumulation of potencies in the mind. Till all or any one of the four reasons exists, till then the new potencies will keep on accumulating for the Soul, and this life-cycle will keep on moving for him. The mean for cessation of potencies is to ensure the absence of all the reasons for their accumulation, only then there will be an absence of potencies in the mind, not otherwise. The means for cessation of four reasons can be termed as follows —
- For the cessation of cause, destruction of nescience is a must;
- For the cessation of motive, one should have desirelessness towards the "worldly and scriptural objects/enjoyments", as explained in aphorism 1.15 above;
- For the cessation of substratum, one should put efforts into making the mind authority-less; and
- For the cessation of the object, one should remain unrelated towards the external and internal objects, and by knowing the reality of these objects one should consider these as avoidable, only then potencies will not be accumulated even on becoming different objects present in the mind.
For the cessation of four reasons, one has to put more effort into cessation of later reason as compared to the previous reason, since the field of operation of later reasons is wider and more subtle as compared to previous ones.
Here absence = cessation of potencies does not mean that the potencies will get destroyed, but their absence means that these are not able to perform their functions. This secret is explained in the next aphorism.

“हेतु” की निवृत्ति के लिए अविद्या का नाश करना आवश्यक है;
“फल” की निवृत्ति के लिए “लौकिक एवं पारलौकिक लक्ष्यों = उद्देश्यों” से विरक्तता प्राप्त करनी चाहिए, जिसको महर्षि पतञ्जलि ने योगसूत्र १.१५ में अपर वैराग्य कहा है;
