Ancient seer Meaning in English : (bhaviShyad vyaktikam) The object which is yet to be manifested is (anaagatam) called "future"; the object (anubhuuta-vyaktikam) which has experienced manifestation in the earlier time (atiitam) is "past". And (sva-vyaapaaropaaruuDham) object which is in the active operation of manifestation (varttamaanam) is "present". (cha) And (etat) these (trayam vastu) three substances of past, present, and future (j~neyam) become the object (j~naanasya) of knowledge. (cha) And (yadi) if (etat) these three objects (na abhaviShyat) do not exist (svaruupataH) in reality, then (idam nirviShayam j~naanam) the knowledge, which has no object, (na udapatsyata) cannot be there. (tasmaat) Therefore (since the knowledge takes place) (atiita-anaagatam) the substance of past and future (asti) exist (svaruupataH iti) in reality. Now he gives the other logic — (kim cha) And further (yadi) if (phalam) fruits (utpitsu) generable of (vaa karmaNaH) the actions either (bhoga-bhaagiiyasya) which causes experience (ok vaa) or (apavarga-bhaagiiyasya) which causes salvation = absolute independence, (nirupaakhyam iti) non-existing then (tat uddeshena) for that purpose i.e., (tena nimittena) for causing experience or salvation, (kushala-anuShThaanam) the performance of virtuous actions (na) will not be (yujyeta) proper. In reality (nimittam) the means (= performance of virtue) (samartham) are only capable of (varttamaanii-karaNe) bringing in present = manifesting (phalasya) the fruits (sataH cha) which were actually existing, and (na) not (apuurva-upajanane) creating the non-existing one. (siddham nimittam) The performed means (visheSha-anugrahaNam kurute) specifically helps in manifesting the (naimittikasya) the action = fruits which can be resulted by those means; (na) do not (utpaadayati) create (apuurvam) a new = non-existing.
(cha) And (dharmii) the characterized object = substance = substratum (aneka-dharma-svabhaavaH) exists with the nature of having many characteristics; (cha) and (tasya) its (dharmaaH) characteristics (pratya-vasthitaaH) are present in the substance (adhvabhedena) by the distinction of the path of existence. (cha) And (yathaa) as (varttamaanam) present characteristic (asti) exists (dravyataH) as substance (vyakti-visheSha-apannam) with its specific appearance, (evam) so, (na) is not in case of (atiitam-anaagatam vaa) past and future characteristics. (katham tarhi) How then do they exist? (anaagatam) Future characteristics (asti) exist (svenaiva vya~Ngyena svaruupeNa) as an appearance itself to be manifested in the future; (cha) and (atiitam) past characteristic as (svena svaruupeNa) its own appearance (anubhuuta-vyaktikena iti) which has already been experienced. Therefore (svaruupa-vyaktiH) manifestation of the characterized object takes place (varttamaanasya adhvanaH eva iti) in the present path of the existence of characteristics alone; and (saa) the same manifestation (na bhavati) does not take place (atiita-anaagatayoH adhvanoH) in the past and future path of existence.
(cha) And (ekasya adhvanaH samaye) at the time of one of these paths of existence for the characterized objects (dvau adhvaanau) other two paths (dharmi-samanvaagatau bhavataH eva iti) remain conjoined with the substratum alone. (iti) Hence (na) there is no concept of (abhuutvaa bhaavaH) "coming into existence of non-existing one" (trayaaNaam adhvanaam) for the characteristics existing in the three paths of existence.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, it has been established that on cessation of four reasons, the potencies also will not exist. But is it possible for the non-existence of any existing object? Do the potencies get destroyed as a specific material? On the other hand, it is established in the scriptures that a non-existing substance cannot come in manifestation, and an existing substance does not get destroyed; so, since the destruction of potencies = residua is not possible, then how do these disappear = cease to exist? This query is being solved in this aphorism. The above conception of the existence of an existing object is one of the accepted principles of Seer Patanjali, which is explained in the commentary on aphorism 3.13-14 above.
In order to understand the solution to the above problem, we are explaining the conception of five types of non-existence as explained by Seer Kanaada, in his VaisheShika Philosophy, as follows —
1. Pre-non-existence:- "kriyaguNa-vyapadeshaabhaavaat praagasat" (VaisheShika 9.1.1) It means the non-existence of an object before its manifestation, as jar and cloths do not exist before their production. But the work-state exists in its cause-state. (It shows the futuristic state/characteristic of an object.)
2. Post-non-existence:- "sadasat" (VaisheShika 9.1.2) i.e., which do not exist after manifestation. As jar gets destroyed after it comes into existence. This is called post-non-existence. (It shows the past state/characteristic of an object.)
3. One-another non-existence:- "sat-cha-asat" (VaisheShika 9.1.4) i.e., the object which exists and does not exist. As "this horse is not a cow and cow is not a horse", i.e., there is the non-existence of cow in the horse and non-existence of horse in the cow; there is the existence of horse in the horse and cow in the cow. This is called one-another non-existence.
4. Complete non-existence:- "yat-chaanyadasadatastadasat" (VaisheShika 9.1.5) i.e., the different types of non-existence from the above categories. It is known as complete non-existence. As horn of man, flower in the sky, son of a barren, etc.
5. Associational non-existence:- "naasti ghato geha iti sato ghatasya geha sa.nsarga-pratiShedhaH" (VaisheShika 9.1.10) i.e., the jar is not in the house, but it is somewhere else. The jar has no relation to the house. It is associational non-existence.
And it has been said in the Gita, as —
naasato vidyate bhaavo naabhaavo vidyate sataH. (Gita 2.16)
A non-existence object cannot come into manifestation, and an existent object cannot be completely destroyed. This has been accepted by the intellectuals. In such a case, how the existing potencies can be declared non-existent? Seer Patanjali said that on account of the difference in the paths of the existence of the characteristics, the substance exists in the form of past and future states. Hence complete non-existence of potencies cannot take place.
While clarifying the future and past objects, Seer Vyaasa said that the object that will be manifested in the coming time or is yet to be manifested is called as 'future object'; and which has experienced its manifestation and is not available now, is called as 'past object'; and whose manifestation is in operation is called as 'present object'. As - till the jar does not come into existence, till then the 'jar' is in a future state; when it got manufactured and is available for use, it is present state; and when it will break down in pieces, then it is will be its past state. In all three states the 'jar' becomes the object of knowledge; since if future 'jar' and past 'jar' do not exist at all, then its knowledge cannot be there. So, on having the knowledge of 'future' and 'past' objects, the objects in the state of 'future' and 'past' are also accepted as existent along with the present products. For the existence of 'future' and 'past' objects, Seer Vyaasa had given one more example — if the fruits of experiences and salvations that can be achieved by the performance of virtuous acts are non-existing, then who will put efforts to perform those virtuous acts for achieving the experiences and salvation? Since the fruits of such virtuous acts are in the 'future state’, but on the other hand, fruits being existing and will be achieved in the future, so, their existence cannot be denied. In fact, any means, such as the performance of virtuous acts, can only manifest those fruits that actually exist, not any such fruit that is imaginary or non-existent, or it does not create any new fruit for such virtuous performances.
Any substance = object exists with many characteristics; and those characteristics remain present in the object by the distinction of the path of existence. But as the present characteristic exists in the manifestation state = with its specific appearance, so, is not in the case of 'future' and 'past' characteristics — since 'future' characteristics exist with as an appearance to be manifested in the future, and 'past' characteristics as an appearance which was manifested and had already been experienced. For this reason, the object is available in the time of manifestation of present characteristics alone; but the past characteristics, being already manifested in the past, and future characteristics, which are yet to be manifested will be able to be manifested in the future alone. So, the characterized object is available at the time of manifestation of present characteristics, and the remaining two types of characteristics remain conjoined with the object alone. So, none of the non-existent objects comes into manifestation, and nor there is complete non-existence of the existing object.
As it has been clarified above there is pre-non-existence for any 'future' object, and post-non-existence for the 'past' object; the same is to be understood in the case of potencies also. For any living being there is post-non-existence of potencies which were already experienced; and the potencies which got manifested in the present birth, according to the life-state, are in the present state of existence; and there is pre-non-existence of all other potencies which are related to all other life-states. In the same way, on cessation of cause, motive, substratum, and object by the performance of yoga, the complete non-existence of potencies does not take place, but these become incapable of producing their fruits, and with the result mind, having fulfilled its duties, exists as pure like the Soul. For such a Soul, there is the achievement of salvation, as per Seer Patanjali, after he leaves the present body i.e., after death from the present life-state. During the period of salvation, potencies do not get manifested, it does not mean that there is complete non-existence of potencies, as —
na tu kaarya-abhaavat-kaaraNaabhaavaH. (VaisheShika Philosophy 1.2.2)
i.e., on the non-existence of work, the absence of cause cannot be declared. So, in the absence of non-experience of worldly enjoyments during the salvation period, the non-existence of un-fruited vehicles of actions and potencies cannot be presumed. For this reason, after the salvation period, these potencies get manifested and Soul comes into the life-cycle again. So, there is no complete non-existence of potencies, but it is either pre-non-existence or post-non-existence only.
