Component Word : te vyaktasuukShmaa guNaatmaanaH.
Sutra in English : te vyaktasuukShmaa guNaatmaanaH.13.
Meaning in English : (te) They (= the characteristics, which are the powers of characterized object alone, in the three paths of existence) are (vyakta-suukShmaaH) manifested and subtle and (guNaatmaanaH) of the nature of "Qualities".
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : te khalvamii tryadhvaano dharmaa varttamaanaa vyaktaatmaano.atiitaanaagataaH suukShmaatmaanaH ShaDavisheSha-ruupaaH. sarvamida.m guNaanaa.m sannivesha visheShamaatramiti paramaarthato guNaatmaanaH. tathaa cha shaastraanushaasanam—

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (te khalu amii) They i.e., (tryadhvaanaH dharmaaH) the characteristics existing in the three paths, and are the powers of the substance, are (vyaktaatmaanaH) of the nature of manifested (varttamaanaaH) while they exist in the present path; and (sukShmaatmaanaH) are of the nature of subtle (atiita-anaagataaH) when they passed into the past path or are yet to be manifested i.e., in the future path of existence; and (ShaDa-visheSha-ruupaaH) are of the six unspecialized forms = appearance i.e., possessing six general stages. (idam sarvam) All these modifications of Matter are (sannivesha visheShamaatram) the different types of combinations (guNaanaam) of the Qualities, (iti) therefore, (paramaarthataH) in reality (guNaatmaanaH) they are of the nature of Qualities only. (tathaa cha) And so, is (shaastra-anushaasanam) teaching of the scripture —
"(paramam ruupam) The real form of (guNaanaam) the Qualities (na) does not (RRIchchhati) come into contact (driShTi-patham) with the line of vision i.e., not visible = feasible with sense organs. And (yat) form of Qualities, (tu) however, (driShTi-patham praaptam) which comes in the line of vision, (tat) that is (sutuchchhakam) paltry since destructive in nature (maayaa eva iti) as delusion".
Vedic Commentary in English : In this aphorism nature of characteristics and characterized objects is clarified. The matter is an inanimate object which is the equilibrium state of the atoms of Illumination, Activity = energy, and Inertia, and always exists in the subtlest form. In inanimate objects, there is no other object which can be more subtle than matter. So, the intellectuals have clearly said that the form of Qualities of Illumination, etc. is not visible. In this, it is also to be understood that the matter cannot be even cognized by any sense organ.
The products of the ‘Matter’ are 23 in number, which are from the element of Pure-beness to gross objects; these are manifested and subtle in nature. Out of these earth, fire, and water and their characteristic changes are visible by eyes, the air is cognized by skin, and the sky is cognized by the property of Sound by ears; and the remaining 18 products are not cognizable even by sense organs, and these exist with various levels of subtlety.
Seer Vyaasa declared that out of the characteristics existing in three paths, characteristics existing in the present path alone are in the state of manifestation; and characteristics in the past or future path of existence are in the subtle = non-manifestation state. In fact, it is to be understood that characteristics always exist in the substratum = object. When the characteristics are in the present path of existence, the object is in the manifestation state, and in the other two paths of existence, the object is in the subtle = non-manifestation state. Here Seer Vyaasa had used the word "shad-visheSharuupaH" i.e., the six unspecialized forms, which means the six-state which are described in nirukta 1.2 as "jaayate, asti, vipariNamate, vardhate, apakShiiyate, vinashyati-iti" i.e., being generated, existing, having changed, increasing, decreasing and destruction. These six states are visible in all the material changes and characteristics changes of Matter.
All the products = objects of Matter, which have characteristics with three paths of existence, are of the nature of Qualities (= atoms) of Illumination, etc. All these objects are made from different mixtures of atoms of Illumination etc. For this reason, some objects have dominance of Quality of Illumination, some objects have dominance of Quality of Energy = Activity, and some objects have dominance of Quality of Inertia; and the other two qualities exist in the secondary mode only. (For more details refer to our commentary on aphorism 2.18). Hence all objects are of the form of Qualities of Illumination etc. only.
Since the real form of Qualities of Illumination, etc. does not come in contact with the line of vision, so, whatever form of material and characteristics changes of Matter are visible, that too is said as paltry as it is destructive in nature, i.e., is like the dilution. The secret behind it is that the objects that come into existence in the present path of characteristics were not there before manifestation, and after coming into manifestation these will deteriorate with time and will ultimately get destroyed. So, the object which remains in the subtle = non-manifestation state in the past as well in the future state is of the nature of destruction and is always inferior to the Soul who does not change at all. The cognizance of this form of all the objects is a must for achieving salvation.
Here the word "maayaa" = delusion is not of the same meaning as given by Achaarya Shankara, since as per him it is meant for an object that is not there but appears to be there. It is accepted as indefinable i.e., which is neither existing nor non-existing. Here Seer Vyaasa had declared that all objects are of the form of Qualities of Illumination etc, and atoms of Illumination, etc. are existing, their material and characteristics changes become available when their characteristics are in the present path of existence. Such type of real knowledge = cognizance of an object is necessary for discriminative knowledge. On the other hand, in the principles of Unitary Theory (Advaitavaada), achaarya Shankara had accepted GOD as a single existing eternal object; Soul and Matter are not accepted as eternal objects, and other things are considered as manifested on account of delusion only. However, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had accepted GOD, Soul, and Matter as eternal objects. There is a clear description of these three in this scripture, i.e., GOD in Aphorism 1.24, Soul in 1.3, and Matter in 2.18.
So, there is no place for the philosophy of Acharya Shankara in this Yoga-philosophy, as these three are accepted as eternal and different objects.
१. क्लेशकर्मविपाकाशयैरपरामृष्टः पुरुषविशेष ईश्वरः॥ १.२४॥ से ईश्वर;
