Ancient seer Meaning in English : (ekaH pariNaamaH) One modification (guNaanaam) of Qualities (prakhyaa-kriyaa-sthiti-shiilaanaam) possessed of the nature of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia (karaNa-bhaavena) as an organ (grahaNaatmakaanaam) with the capacity to grasp the object is (shrotram indriyam) is the sense of hearing. And (ekaH pariNaamaH) another modification of Qualities (shabda-tanmaatra-bhaavena) as the soniferious ultimate atom (graahyaatmakaanaam) with the capacity to be grasped is (shabdaH viShayaH iti) a sound object. (ekaH pariNaamaH) One modificaation of (muurtti-samaana-jaatiiyaanaam shabdaadiinaam) generic qualities of form etc. of five sound etc. (tanmaatra-avayavaH) atoms of unspecialized subtle modifications are (prithivii-paramaaNuH) the atom of earth. (cha) And (ekaH pariNaamaH) single modification (teShaam) of the atoms of the earth is (prithivii) the earth, (gauH vrikShaH parvataH aadi iti) the cow, the tree, the hill, etc. (evam) Similarly (bhuutaantareShu api) in case of other elements also (upaadaaya) by taking up (sneha-uShNya-praNaamitva-avakaashadaanaani) generic qualities of smoothness (of water atom), temperature = heat (of fire atom), impulsion = movement (of gas = air atom), and providing space (of sky atom) (saamaanyam eka-vikaaraarambhaH) manifestation of single modification of same class (samaadheyaH) is to be understood.
Abrogation of momentary theory (and/or theory of Idealism) — (na asti) There is no (arthaH) object (vij~naana-visahacharaH) other than intelligence; and (j~naanam) intelligence (artha-visahacharam) distinct from the object, (tu) however, (asti) is (svapnaadau kalpitam) like fancied in dreams. (anayaa dishaa) In this way, by this logic (ye) who (apahnuvate) deny (vastu-svaruupam) the physical reality of the object, i.e., all objects are (j~naana-parikalpanaa-maatram) fabrication of mind only; (svapna-viShayopamam vastu) like the objects experienced in dreams, and therefore, (paramaarthataH) in reality (na) do not (asti iti) exist, (ye aahuH iti) say in this way, (tatha) so, (te) they (utsrijya) give up (vastu-svaruupam) the real form of the object, i.e., (idam vastu) the object (sva-maahaatmyena) which exists on its own and (pratyu-pasthitam) available by cognition through sense organs, (apramaaNaatmakena vikalpa-j~naana-balena) on the strength of unreal imaginative knowledge. (katham) How is it (syuH) possible (shraddheya-vachanaaH) to have faith in their cognition when they (apalapantaH) refute (tadeva) the existence of the real object?
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, all objects are said in the form of Qualities of Illumination, etc. only. So, when all the manifested and subtle = non-manifested objects are the results of Qualities, then why there are different names = nouns for the different objects? This modification is sound and this modification is a sense organ, how is this type of affair possible? While giving a solution for this doubt, Seer Patanjali said different combinations of Qualities resulting in a distinguished modification are identified as a separate object. In the last aphorism, Seer Vyaasa used the term "sannivesha-visheShamaatram" which means all products come into manifestation by the different types of combinations of atoms (= Qualities) of Illumination. This secret is to be understood as follows — the three Qualities of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia act = move in the primary and secondary combinations to become an object. In some combinations, atoms of Illuminations act primarily, and atoms of Activity and Inertia are in the secondary state; in some combinations, atoms of Activity act primarily, and atoms of Illumination and Inertia are in the secondary state; and in some combinations, atoms of Inertia act primarily, and atoms of Illumination and Activity are in the secondary state. In this way by such types of cumbersome combinations, different types of objects come into manifestation. Working = properties of Qualities of Illumination etc. are explained in the commentary to aphorism 2.18 that how these Qualities provide the purposes of experience and salvation to the Soul by being existing in the primary and secondary way. In that aphorism, 10 properties / work-states of Qualities are described.
Here in this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa said that Qualities possessed of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia get mixed up in different combinations to produce various modifications, out of that one modification with the capacity to grasp is available as the sense of hearing; in the same way, in case of other sense and work organs, the Qualities get mixed up in various combinations to become that sense, work organ. These sense and work organs have the capacity to grasp their respective object. From these Qualities, the modification with the capacity to be grasped in the form of a soniferious atom termed as a sound object gets produced; in the same way, the other four subtle elements are the objects of smell, color, taste, and touch also get produced. From the atoms of five subtle elements, by taking the generic qualities of form, atoms of the earth are produced; by taking the generic qualities of smoothness, atoms of water are produced; by taking the generic qualities of temperature, atoms of fire are produced; by taking the generic qualities of impulsion = movement, atoms of air are produced; and by taking the generic qualities of providing space, atoms of the sky get produced. Further from the atoms of earth, earth, tree, hill, cow, etc. get produced. In the same way from the atoms of water, fire, air, and sky similar types of objects of the same qualities get produced, as from the atoms of water, water, and similar liquid objects, etc. get produced. In all these products the cause of the different types of modifications is the different type of combinations of Qualities of Illumination etc. and their existence in the primary-secondary state. In this way with the production of different modifications, the various modifications are known as distinct objects.
In this aphorism, Seer Vyaasa had abrogated the conception of Idealism and Momentary theory. These people believe that an object does not exist, it is only intelligence. A person gets knowledge without the existence of the object as it takes place in a dream. As there is no object existing in the dream, but it is experienced, in the same way, the knowledge of an object takes place without the existence of the object in this world, and intelligence alone becomes the form of an object. In other words, all objects are the fabrication of the mind only. Seer Vyaasa said this conception is not worthy of belief on account of the following reasons —
- In the wake-up state the objects become available by having a contact of organs with the objects; however, just for the knowledge of the object in the mind, there is no need for such type of contact of organs.
- On the basis of the example of fancied = imaginary knowledge of dreams, the existence of an object cannot be denied. The reason behind this is that the object, which is experienced in the dream, is either cognized or heard in the wake-up state, and the potencies of such organ / verbal cognition also exist in the mind. In dreams, one sees those potencies alone either systematically or otherwise. In such a case on the basis of object-less knowledge in dreams, though which takes place on the basis of potencies of real cognition, how is it proper to deny the existence of the object? so, their conception is not worthy of faith. Hence the conception that an "object is intelligence only, and does not really exist" is against reality.
The conception of momentary theory is also criticized by Seer Patanjali in the next aphorism.
