Meaning in English : (kutaH cha) And how is (etat) this belief, that real objects are the imagination of knowledge only, (anyaayyam) untrue = against logic?
Sutra in English : vastusaamye chittabhedaattayorvibhaktaH panthaaH.15.
Meaning in English : (chitta-bhedaat) On account of the difference of mentality = knowledge, (vastu-saamye) even in case of an external object is same, (panthaaH) path of the existence of (tayoH) the knowledge = intelligence and object (vibhaktaH) are different.

Ancient seer Meaning in English : (ekam) One (vastu) object (bahu-chitta-almbanii-bhuutam) becoming the base of knowledge for many minds (saadhaaraNam) is common to all the knowers. (tat khalu) That object is (na) neither (eka chitta-parikalpitam) imagined by one mind, (na) nor (api) even (aneka-chitta-parikalpitam) imagined by more than one mind; (kintu) however that object (sva-pratiShTham) exists in itself. (katham) How is this? Since (chitta-bhedaat) there is a difference of knowledge = mentality, (vastu saamye) even the object is the same.
(vastu-saamye api) Even though the external object is the same (chittasya) mind (sukha-j~naanam bhavati) experiences pleasure (dharma-apekSham) on account of virtue; (tataH eva) from the same object (duHkha-j~naanam) there is a feeling of pain (adharma-apekSham) on account of vice; (tataH eva) from the same object (muuDha-j~naanam) there is an illusion (avidyaa-apekSham) on account of nescience; and (tataH eva) even from the same object (maadhyastha-j~naanam) there is indifference towards it (samyag-darshana-apekSham iti) on account of real cognition. Now (kasya chittena) by whose mind (tat) that object (parikalpitam) is imagined?
(cha) And further (na) it is not (yuktaH) proper that (anyasya chitta-uparaagaH) mind of another person is colored (arthena) by an object (anya-chitta-parikalpitena) which has been imagined by some other mind. (tasmaat) For these reasons (panthaaH) path of existence (vastu-j~naanayoH) of an object and intelligence = knowledge (vibhaktaH) is different (graahya-grahaNa-bheda-bhinnayoH) as the object to be grasped and mind which grasps are distinct. (asti) There is (api) even (na) no (sa~Nkara-gandhaH) possibility of suspicion of oneness and/or mixture (anayoH iti) of these two.
(punaH) Further (saa.nkhya-pakShe) in the Saankhya philosophy (vastu) every object (triguNam) is made of three qualities (cha) and (guNa-vrittam) the functioning of Qualities is (chalam iti) ever changeful. Therefore, the object (abhisambadhyate) comes into a relationship (chittaiH) with the mind of a person (dharmaadi-nimitta-apekSham) on account of incidental causes of virtue etc. i.e., vice, nescience, real cognition, etc; (cha) and that object (hetuH bhavati) become a cause of (pratyayasya) notions (= pleasure, pain, illusion, and indifference, etc.) (utpadyamaanasya) being generated (tena tena aatmanaa) in that form (nimitta-anuruupasya) according to the incidental cause.
(kechit aahuH) Some (= believers of momentary theory) say that "(arthaH) the external object, (bhogyatvaat) as it is meant to be enjoyed, (j~naana-sahabhuuH eva) is generated with the knowledge = intelligence alone, (sukhaadivat iti) like the feeling of pleasure and pain." (te) Those people (baadhamaanaaH) by refuting (saadhaaraNatvam) the object commonly experienced by the people in general, (dvaaraa) by mean of (etayaa) this conception, (apahnuvate) deny (vastu-ruupam eva) the existence of object alone (puurva-uttara-kShaNeShu) in the previous and subsequent moments.
Vedic Commentary in English : The people of Idealism and Momentary theory believe that - "Object is the imagination of the mind. An object does not exist in reality but appears just like the knowledge of a dream. As there is no object in the dream, but appears to be there, and by that knowledge one also experiences pleasure and pain. And on waking up, neither that object is available, nor the state of pleasure-pain remains. In the same way, the object is imagined in the wake-up state, does not exist in reality."
Why such type of conception is against logic and scripture? In this regard, Seer Patanjali said that even though the object is one, different knowledge gets generated in the minds of different people, hence object and knowledge are proved as different.
In this regard, Seer Vyaasa further said that any object is available for cognition to different persons by contact with their respective organs. Such an object can neither be imagined by one mind nor is even imagined by the minds of many people; but that object, being made from the different combinations of Qualities of Illumination, etc., exists in itself in reality. So, being available for different minds for cognition, any object exists on account of its independent existence.
By cognizance of one object, one experience, on account of virtue, pleasure in his mind; some other person, on account of vice, feels pain in his mind; the same object creates an illusion in the mind of one who has nescience in his mind; and the same object creates indifference in the mind of one who has real cognition of the object. One common example in this regard is - on having a beautiful wife with good qualities, his husband has pleasure in his mind; her co-wife (of the husband) feels pain, on account of vice, on being neglected by the husband; she alone becomes the cause illusion in the mind of another sexual and lewd person, on account of nescience; and a yogi, who had cognized the reality of the body, feels indifference in his mind and does not have any desire for her. So, the one lady, on account of different incidental causes, become the cause of pleasure, pain, illusion, and indifference in the mind of different people. Now by whose mind that lady is to be considered as imagined?
If that lady is imagined by the mind of one person, then how is it possible, or proper to have the contact of minds of other persons with that imagined lady? It means that one person imagines an object which creates pleasure in his mind, and another person by contacting that imagined object has the feeling of attachment or aversion for such an imagined object, how is it possible? so, on account of object and knowledge being different, it is proper to accept that the object is independent and exists in itself as one. There is no possibility of the oneness of object and knowledge in any case.
The believers of the momentary theory say that "the external object, as it is meant to be enjoyed, is generated with the knowledge alone, like the feeling of pleasure and pain." In such case, the existence of an object is to be accepted during the time of manifestation of knowledge of the object in the mind; then the existence of an object, before the manifestation of such knowledge in the mind, cannot be proved, and on not having the knowledge of that object in the mind at a future time, destruction of an object is to be accepted. It means that an object, which is imagined by a mind, should come into existence for that mind at that particular time, and it should get destroyed after the cessation of knowledge of that object in that particular mind. Since the existence of an object remains, and that object is available for cognition to other persons, so, believing the object is the imagination of the mind is totally against logic and perception.
As the object is said as a modification of three Qualities, in the previous aphorism, and nature of Qualities is said as highly changeable. So, modifications in the mind take place due to the effect of Qualities; and pleasure gets manifested in the mind on account of the dominance of Quality of Illumination; pain gets manifested in the mind on account of the dominance of Quality of Energy = Activity; and illusion takes place in mind on account of the dominance of Quality of Inertia. So, all types of pleasure-pain-illusion get manifested in the mind of a person on account of incidental causes of virtue, vice, nescience, etc. The same object creates pleasure on account of virtue, pain on account of vice, and illusion on account of nescience in the minds of different people, as per the example given above.
So, accepting the object as the imagination of the mind is against the perception and scriptures as well. Other arguments to prove this as a misconception are given in the next aphorism.
