Meaning in English : (cha) And (vastu) the external object (na) is not (eka-chitta-tantram) dependent upon one mind, so, when (tad) that object (apramaaNakam) is not cognized by that mind, (tadaa) then (kim syaat) what will happen to that object?
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : ekachittatantra.m chedvastu syaattadaa chitte vyagre niruddhe vaa svaruupameva tenaaparaamRRiShTamanyasyaaviShayiibhuutamapramaaNakamagRrihiita-svabhaavaka.m kenachittadaanii.m ki.m tatsyaata sambadhyamaana.m cha punashchittena kuta utpadyetaa ye chaasyaanupasthitaa bhaagaaste chaasya na syureva.m naasti pRRiShThamityudaramapi na gRRihyeta. tasmaatsvatantro.arthaH sarvapuruShasaadhaaraNaH svatantraaNi cha chittaani pratipuruSha.m pravarttante. tayoH sa.mbandhaadupalabdhiH puruShasya bhoga iti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (chet) If (vastu) the object (syaat) were (eka-chitta-tantram) dependent on one mind i.e., the object is related to a particular mind, (tadaa) then in case (chitte) that mind is being (vyagre) attending = attached to another object (vaa) or (niruddhe) is restrained and therefore (tena svaruupam eva) the form of the object i.e., the object itself is (aparaamriShTam) not cognized by that mind and (aviShayiibhuutam) nor became the subject (anyasya) of the mind of another person, so, (apramaaNakam) becomes un-cognized, (tadaaniim) then at that time (agrihiita-svabhaavakam) the object being in the nature of non-cognition (kenachit) by any mind, (kim syaat) what will happen (tat) to that object? (cha) And (punaH) again (sambadhya-maanam) on being attached = related to (chittena) that mind, (kutaH) from where will that object (utpadyeta) come into existence? (cha) And (bhaagaaH) the parts (asya) of this object (ye) which are (anupasthitaaH) not in contact with the mind, (te) those (na syuH) should not exist (asya) for this object. (cha) And (evam) in this way (priShTham) back (na asti) is not there (iti) therefore (udaram api) stomach also (na) should not (grihyeta) be cognized.
(tasmaat) Therefore (arthaH) every object is (svatantraH) self-existing = self-dependent, (sarva-puruSha-saadhaaraNaH) is commonly available for cognition to all persons, (cha) and (chittani) minds are also (svatantraaNi) self-dependent and are (pravarttante) engaged (prati-puruSham) separately in each person. (upalabdhiH) The perception secured (sambandhaat) by relationship (tayoH) of both i.e., mind and object, is (bhogaH) experience = enjoyment (puruShasya iti) of the Soul.
Vedic Commentary in English : The object is not an imagination of the mind, for these other arguments are given in this aphorism. Seer Patanjali said that external object is not dependent on the mind; if this is accepted then what will happen to the imagined object when the mind will not be in contact with the imagined object? Whether that previously imagined object will not exist?
Mind, being the modification of Matter, is of three-fold Qualities. So, due to the dominance of Quality of Activity, it is changeable; and for this reason, it frequently moves from one object/subject to another subject/object; and by the practice of yoga, on cessation of all modification, it reaches in the restrained state. When the mind, on being in contact with one subject, imagines one object, then after that when it gets in contact with another subject and gets attached to another subject/object or when it is restrained, then the form of that previously imagined object will not be cognized. That object being imagined by the mind of one person, not being imagined by the minds of other people, and not being the subject of other minds, i.e., not being able to be cognized by the other mind, that imagined object should not exist. But that object exists, and if that object does not exist then that should in no way be cognized by other minds at different times. And wherefrom that object will come into existence when that first person, who had imagined it previously, will contact with that previously imagined object again with his mind? Let us understand this by an example - I have imagined an object, say a book, and that book being under the control of my mind, should be cognized by me only. Now my mind gets attached to another object = my wife or my child, another living being; in such case that previously imagined book at this point of time should not exist, since that book is not the basis of contact for my mind at the present moment, and that book cannot be the base of contact for the minds of other persons, since that book is not under the control of those minds. So, at the time of attachment of mind with another object = my wife or my child, another living being, the book should be non-existing. And again, when I make that book as the basis of contact for my mind, then wherefrom that same book will come into existence? But in fact, when I see a book with any book-seller, then all those who are seeing that book they are able to cognize that book, and that is brought in use at all times, neither that book gets destroyed at any time nor does it comes into existence at other time whenever one wants to use it. So, the object is not the imagination of the mind.
If the object is imagined by the mind, then those parts of an object, that are not in contact with the mind, should not exist. As, when the back of the body is in contact with the mind, and the stomach is not being cognized, the stomach should not be there; and in the same way, when the stomach is in contact with the mind, and the back is not being cognized, back should not be existing. But in fact, both the stomach and back are existing parts of the body, though not being cognized at the same time.
Some other arguments in this regard can be given as follows —
While giving the properties of mind Seer Gautam said - "yugapat-GYaanaanutpattiH-manso li~Ngam" (Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.16) i.e., not having more than one knowledge at one time, is the property of mind. In such a state, if the object is said production of knowledge, then for one person, there should be one object available for contact at any point of time in this world. When the mind gets attached to another subject that previous object should get destroyed. But this is against reality.
In the same way, one will imagine only pleasure-full objects for himself. Then in such a case, one should have only those objects that provide him pleasure only. But in fact, all objects do not create pleasure in the mind of a person, and the availability of objects that create pain and illusion, etc. in the mind of a person, proves this conception as baseless.
If the object is imagined by the mind, then the object should have all the best qualities. As, the wife, being imagined by the man, should be the most beautiful and best in the world; and in the same way, the husband, being imagined by the woman should be the best fit for her in the world. But the reality is totally different.
One object is being cognized by the minds of many persons, in this regard if it is said that - that object is imagined by many persons, then the object imagined by many minds should be peculiar = different from others. As one lady alone is cognized - as a daughter by the father, as a sister by a brother, as wife by the husband, as a mother by son. As different persons cognize the same lady differently, then the conception of imagination of that lady by the different mind is baseless. Since that lady is already existing before the imagination of the younger brother, husband, and son, so, it is baseless to say that - that lady is imagined by such persons.
Hence Seer Vyaasa said that every object is self-existing, and is commonly available for cognition for all persons. In the same way, the mind being part of the subtle body is also self-existing for all persons, and that too is different for everyone. By the contact of an existing object and existing mind whatever knowledge (= pleasure, pain, illusion, desirelessness, indifference, etc.) is generated, that is called the experience of the person.
