Component Word : tad uparaagaapekShitvaat chittasya vastu j~naataaj~naatam.
Sutra in English : taduparaagaapekShitvaachchittasya vastu j~naataaj~naatam.17.
Meaning in English : (tad-uparaaga-apekShitvaat) Being in need of coloured by the external object, (vastu) the external object (j~naataa-j~naatam) is known (sometime) and unknown (sometime) (chittasya) to the mind.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : ayaskaantamaNikalpaa viShayaa ayaHsadharmaka.m chittam-abhisambandhyopara~njayanti. yena cha viShayeNoparakta.m chitta.m sa viShayo j~naatastato.anyaH punaraj~naataH. vastuno j~naataaj~naata-svaruupatvaatpariNaami chittam.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (viShayaaH) External objects (ayaskaanta-maNi-kalpaaH) are like the load-stone; and they (upara~njayanti) color (chittam) the mind (ayaH-sadharmakam) which is similar in characteristics to iron, (abhi-sambandhya) on coming into contact with it. (cha) And (yena viShayeNa) by whatever object (chittam) mind (uparaktam) is colored, (saH) that (viShayaH) object (j~naatahH) is known to it, (punaH) and (anyaH) objects other than (tataH) that object (aj~naataH) is unknown. (chittam) The mind (pariNaami) is changeful since (vastunaH j~naat-aj~naata-svaruupatvaat) it assumes the nature of known and unknown objects.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, an object is proved as self-existing, and it was established that by the contact of an existing object and existing mind whatever knowledge is generated in the mind, is called the experience of the person. So, the mind is of the capacity of cognizing the objects; and objects are being cognized in the mind. In such a case, the object being large in numbers, why the mind does not cognize more than one or all the objects at one point of time?
In fact, Seer Gautama had given the property of mind as - "yugapat-GYaana-anutpattiH-manso li~Ngam" (Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.16) i.e., not having more than one knowledge at one time, is the property of mind. In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali described the process of cognizance, by which only one object remains cognized at one time. He said that the mind is required to be colored by an external object, so, objects are either known or unknown to the mind.
External objects are said as load-stone, which means that these objects exist with the quality of attraction, yet they are to be cognized. For the knowledge of these external objects, an internal instrument is required which is known as the mind which cognizes these objects, and Seer Vyaasa had compared it with the iron. As per the principle of loan-stone and iron, load-stone creates movement in the iron and gets connected with the iron. Here the external objects, by coming into contact through the sense organs, color the mind, i.e., make the mind appear as the form of an object. This fact had been explained in aphorism 1.41 where the mind is compared with a pure transparent crystal. At any point of time, the mind gets colored by the object which came to its contact and appears in the form of the object i.e., appears just like the shape of the object. This is called the coloring of the mind with the object. This state is the knowledge of the subject/object in the mind. In this way when the mind is colored with any object as above, then all other objects remain unknown to it. Since the mind cannot come into contact with more than one object at a time, hence all the subjects/objects, other than the contracted subject/object at that point of time, do not have the possibility of contact with the mind, so, the mind is not able to cognize those subjects/objects. Here it is to be understood that whichever subject/object is colored in the mind, that object and its knowledge being coming into operation, is known to the mind, and all other subjects/objects remain unknown in the mind at that particular point of time.
In fact, the mind, being the product of inanimate Matter, is of three-fold qualities; so, it does not have a characteristic of knowledge i.e., the knowledge does not take place in it. Since knowledge is characteristic of the Soul (Ref - ichchha-dveSha-prayatna-sukha-duHkha-GYaanaani-aatmano li.ngam. (Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.10)), and he alone has the knowledge of subjects/objects. So, the meaning of "known and unknown of the subject to the mind" is that whichever subject/object colors the mind at a particular time, that is called known; and all other subjects/objects are unknown to the mind. Because of this capacity of mind, it is possible to achieve the one-pointed and restrained states of mind. If all the subjects/objects remain known to the mind at a particular time, then it would not have been possible to concentrate the mind on a particular subject/object, and nor it could have to be restrained; and with the result, Cognitive and Ultra-cognitive Trance would never have been achieved. So, by the practice of keeping the mind continuously colored with one subject/object, a one-pointed state of mind is achieved, and with the result, Cognitive Trance is achieved. In the same way by the practice of stopping the coloring of the mind from any subject/object i.e., not making any base for coloring the mind, a restrained state of mind is achieved, and with the result, Ultra-cognitive Trance is achieved.
Bhoja, while commenting on this aphorism, had mentioned the knownness and unknownness of memory also by the knownness and unknownness of subjects/objects. On the manifestation of potencies, of any subject/object (on account of equality, etc.) which were previously experienced, in the mind, memories relating to that subject/object also get manifested, and memories of other subjects/objects do not take place.
On account of the knownness and unknownness of subjects/ objects, the mind is said as changeable. So, the mind is changeable on account of being colored by different subjects/objects, at different points of time, i.e., appearing in the form of different subjects/objects at different points of time. So, it becomes colored by different subjects/objects at different times.
