Component Word : sadaa j~naataaH chittavRRittayaH tatprabhoH puruShasya apariNaamitvaat.
Preface to Sutra in English : yasya tu tadeva chitta.m viShayastasya —
Meaning in English : (tasya) For the Soul, (yasya tu) to whom, however, (tat chittam) that colored mind (eva) is (viShayaH) subject —
Sutra in English : sadaa j~naataashchittavRRittayastatprabhoH puruShasyaapariNaamitvaat.18.
Meaning in English : (chitta-vrittayaH) The modifications of the mind are (sadaa) always (j~naataaH) known (tat-prabhoH) to its lord i.e., (puruShasya) the Soul (apariNaamitvaat) on account of his non-changeability.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : yadi chittavatprabhurapi puruShaH pariNamet tatastadviShayaash-chittavRRittayaH shabdaadiviShayavajj~naataaj~naataaH syuH. sadaaj~naatatva.m tu manasastatprabhoH puruShasyaapariNaamitvam-anumaapayati.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yadi) If (prabhuH) the lord, (puruShaH) i.e., the Soul, (api) also (pariNamet) changes (chittavat) like the mind, (tataH) then (chitta-vrittayaH) the modifications of the mind, (tad-viShayaaH) which are subject for the Soul, (syuH) will be (j~naata-aj~naataaH) known and unknown (shabdaadi-viShayavat) like the objects of sound, etc. (manasaH) The mental modifications, (tu) however, (sadaa-j~ naatatvam) are always known to the Soul, proves (apariNaamitvam) the non-changeability of (tat-prabhoH) its lord, (puruShasya) the Soul (anumaapayati) by inference.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, subjects are said as known and known to the mind, i.e., the subject/object which colored the mind, is called as known to the mind; and all other subjects /objects are said as unknown to the mind. For this purpose, subjects/objects are said as load-stone, and the mind is said as iron. On account of getting colored and appearing in the form of a subject/object by its contact with the subject/object through the contact of an organ, the mind is said changeable, since it appears in the form of different subjects/objects at different points of time by getting colored with those subjects/objects. On the other hand, in this aphorism, with regard to modifications and the Soul, it is said that the modifications of the mind are always known to the Soul since the Soul is not changeable.
In this regard, a question is raised that as the mind is the knower and non-knower of the subjects/objects, in the same way, the Soul is also the viewer of the subjects/objects which became present in the mind (i.e., when the blue color is known in the mind, then yellow color is not known to it), so, Soul being the cognisor of the subjects/objects of mind, should also be said as changeable since he only cognizes that subject/object which is present at that particular point of time?
In the last aphorism, it is clarified that knowledge is characteristic of the Soul, and it is not available in the mind, which is the product of inanimate Matter; so, in fact, the mind is not the real knower of the subject/object. The subjects/objects are said as known and unknown to the mind on account of coloring-ness of mind. On the other hand, the Soul has the characteristics of knowledge, he alone is the real knower of the subjects/objects becoming present in the mind. So, when the mind is colored by the blue color, at that point of time Soul knows the blue color, and he also knows that this color is not yellow or red, etc., and this color is blue which is different from other colors. If the Soul is not having the knowledge of previously experienced yellow/red, and other colors, he will not be able to distinguish the blue color from other colors. But at that time distinguishing the blue color from other colors by the Soul proves that he has the knowledge of previously known yellow/red and other colors. So, in this way, being unchangeable in nature, the Soul knows all the subjects/objects of mind at all times. The difference between the mind and Soul is to be understood as follows —
1. On receiving any object through the contact of organs with the object, mind being the transparent crystal, get colored with the object; but none of the objects which had colored the mind, can color the Soul, and nor any modification of mind can make any change in the form of Soul. Hence all the modifications manifest in the mind only, not in the Soul.
2. Mind, being an inanimate object, cannot get the knowledge of the objects/subjects. But the subject/object that colors the mind at any point of time is said as known to the mind, and other subjects/objects remain unknown to it. On the other hand, the Soul is the knower of modifications of the mind and knows all the modifications of the mind.
3. During the time of worldly affairs, objects/subject, being of the nature of load-stone for the mind, colors the mind; on the other hand, with regard to the relation of mind and Soul, the mind like the load-stone is a benefactor to the Soul by nearness alone, and it becomes the property of its lord (= Soul) (Ref - chittamayaskaantmaNikalpam sannidhimaatra-upakaari drishyatvena svam bhavati puruShasya-svaaminaH. Vyaasa 1.4). As the mind, being like a load-stone becomes colored by the subjects/objects, however, in the same way, it cannot color the Soul.
4. Mind being the three-fold product of Qualities, has the different planes namely disturbed, stupefied, occasionally steady, one-pointed, and restrained. There is always one or another state dominating the mind. On the other hand, the Soul appears in the form of modifications of the mind, and exists in his own form in the restrained state of mind, on the other hand since unchangeable in nature, appears in the form of modifications in all other states of mind. In this state Soul is the knower of all the modifications of the mind and none of the modifications remain unknown to him.
This secret can be understood from the Vyaasa commentary on aphorism 2.4. See when the affliction of attachment is in the operative mode in the mind, the Soul on account of being appearing in the form of modifications knows that I am attached to this object. At that point of time aversion is in an alternated state. At that point of time, however, the aversion toward the other object is not in operative mode i.e., suppressed mode, but Soul has the knowledge of that state of aversion.
In the same way when the attachment toward a particular woman is in an operative state, and though the attachment towards the other women being in the suppressed = alternated state, the Soul has the knowledge of attachment towards other women along with the knowledge of attachment to that particular woman. And Soul also knows the aversion towards those objects also, for which it is in the suppressed = alternated state in the mind, however, that aversion will not come in the operative state till those bases = objects become available in the mind. If this is not accepted, then how the attachment or aversion towards other bases = objects, will get manifested in the inanimate mind, on becoming those bases = objects available in the mind; since such type of activity cannot take place in the inanimate object automatically. So, it is an established fact that Soul has the knowledge of all the bases of attachment and aversion on account of his previous experience. So, it is proved that all the modifications of the mind are known to the Soul.
If the Soul had been changeable just like the mind, then he could not have known all the modifications of the mind simultaneously; then he would have known that modification only with which he would have been colored, and all other modifications remained unknown to him. But this is not the reality, so, Seer Vyaasa had said in the commentary to 1.4 - "vyutthaane yaaH chitta-vrittayaH-tadvishiShTavrittiH puruShaH" i.e., in the state of the outgoing state of mind the Soul appears in the same form of modifications as are present in the mind. In the whole scripture, neither Seer Patanjali nor Seer Vyaasa mentioned that the Soul gets colored by the modifications of the mind. However, on the other hand, the Soul is clearly said as a viewer of modifications of the mind. In the commentary to aphorism 2.20, Seer Vyaasa said - "the mind, having for its sphere the known and unknown objects, is of changing nature, and its = mind's changeful-ness is shown by its objects, such as cow, etc. and jar, etc. are sometimes known and sometimes unknown. However, on the other hand, the sphere of the Soul is always known, proves the unchangeableness of the Soul. How? Because it never happens that object of the Soul named as the mind becomes some time is known to it and unknown on the other times. Hence the uniform perpetual knowability of the Soul is proved; and thence the non-changeability of the Soul is proved." Hence all the modifications of the mind are always known to the Soul, and for this reason, he is unchangeable.
