Component Word : na tat svaabhaasam dRRishyatvaat.
Preface to Sutra in English : syaadaasha~Nkaa chittameva svaabhaasa.m viShayaabhaasa.m cha bhaviShyatiityagnivat —
Meaning in English : (syaat aasha~Nkaa) A doubt may arise that (chittam eva) mind alone (bhaviShyati) may be (svaabhaasam) self-illuminating (cha) as well as (viShayaabhaasam) the illuminator of objects, (agnivat iti) like the fire which illuminates self and other objects?
Sutra in English : na tatsvaabhaasa.m dRRishyatvaat.19.
Meaning in English : (tat) The mind (na) is not (svaabhaasam) self-illuminating (drishyatvaat) since it is knowable and inanimate.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : yathetaraaNiindriyaaNi shabdaadayashcha dRRishyatvaanna svaabhaasaani tathaa mano.api pratyetavyam. na chaagniratra dRRiShTaantaH. na hyagniraatmasvaruupamaprakaasha.m prakaashayati prakaashashchaaya.m prakaashyaprakaashakasa.myoge dRRiShTaH. na cha svaruupamaatre.asti sa.myogaH. ki.m cha svaabhaasa.m chittamityagraahyameva kasyachiditi shabdaarthaH. tadyathaa—svaatmapratiShThamaakaasha.m na parapratiShThamityarthaH. svabuddhiprachaarapratisa.mvedanaat-sattvaanaa.m pravRRittirdRRishyate — kruddho.aha.m bhiito.ahamamutra me raago.amutra me krodha iti. etatsvabuddheragrahaNe na yuktamiti.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (yathaa) As (itaraaNi) other (indriyaaNi) organs (cha) and (shabdaadayaH) the objects of sound etc. (na) are not (svaabhaasaani) self-illuminating (drishyatvaat) since these are knowable, (tathaa) so, (pratyetavyam) it is to be understood (manaH api) with regard to mind also that it is not self-illuminating. (cha) And (agniH) fire (na) cannot be (driShTaantaH) example of analogy (atra) here; (hi) since (agniH) fire (na) does not (prakaashayati) illuminates (aprakaasham aatma-svaruupam) its form which is not illuminated. The logic given in this regard is — (cha) and (ayam prakaashaH) Illumination of an object (driShTaH) is seen (prakaashya-prakaashaka-sa.nyoge) on the contact of the object to be illuminated and illuminator; (na cha asti sa.nyogaH) and there is no contact as above (svaruupa-maatre) in its own form of the object.
(kim cha) And if somebody says that (chittam) mind is (svaabhaasam iti) self-illuminating (shabdaarthaH iti) means that (agraahyam) it is not perceivable (kasyachit eva) by any other entity i.e., the soul; (tad-yathaa) as (aakaasham) sky (svaatma-pratiShTham) is self-supported (arthaH iti) means that (na) it is not (para-pratiShTham) supported by other. Now shows the defect in this conception — (pravrittiH) Activities of (sattvaanaam) living beings (drishyate) are seen (sva-buddhi-prachaara-prati-samvedanaat) on the knowledge of the modifications of one's mind, as (aham kruddhaH) "I am angry", (aham bhiitaH) "I am afraid", (amutra me raagaH) "I am attached in this object", and (amutra me krodhaH) "my anger is with regard to this object" (iti) in this way (etat) this type of activities (na yuktam) are not possible (sva-buddheH agrahaNe iti) without accepting the knowledge of modifications of one's mind = own mind.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, the Soul is proved as a real knower. When the object gets colored in the mind, then that object is said as known to the mind, but the Soul only knows that colored object. In this regard, those who do not believe in the existence of a conscious Soul said that as fire is of the nature of an illuminator and is also self-illuminating; in the same way, by accepting the mind as self-illuminating along with the illuminator of the objects, there will be no need to accept any conscious object Soul for the successful affairs of this world. To counter this argument, Seer Patanjali said that the mind being knowable, is not self-illuminating.
While explaining the form of knowable in aphorism 2.18 Seer Patanjali said that knowable is of the nature of Illumination, Activity, and Inertia; its variated objects are in the form of subtle and gross objects/elements and organs; and is for the purpose to provide experience and salvation to the Souls. Mind also being knowable, performs the functions of providing experience and salvation to the Soul, and is an inanimate object of Qualities. Seer Vyaasa further clarified this by saying that sense organs and objects, cannot be known about themselves, as these are knowable, in the same way, the mind is not self-illuminating. Mind, being the product with the dominance of Quality of Illumination, illuminates the object, but the conscious Soul is the real viewer of such an illuminated object.
In this regard, the opponent had given the example of fire. Seer Vyaasa abrogated the concept by saying that the example of fire is not proper here. Fire is not self-illuminating along with the Quality of Illumination, since it does not illuminate its non-illuminated form. In fact, fire also gets illuminated in the mind by the contact of eyes, not by itself; if this is not so, then one who does not have eyes should be able to perceive the form of fire. For this he had given the logic that the Illumination of an object takes place on having the contact of illuminator (= mind) and illuminated object; and the existence of properties of illuminated and illuminator are not possible in one object.
In this regard i.e., the mind is self-illuminating if it is said that the meaning of self-illuminating is that the mind is a self-illuminator, but is not perceivable by other conscious Soul, as the sky exists in itself i.e., it is not supported by any other object; in the same way, the of mind is self-illuminating, means that it is not perceived by any other object. While abrogating this conception also, Seer Vyaasa said that the activities of living beings are possible by having the knowledge of modifications of one's mind, not otherwise. As the behavior of one that - "I am angry with such person; have attachment for such persons or property; am afraid of such person/animal", etc. are not possible without having the knowledge of the base/object of modification present in the mind. Since affairs of the living being are possible with the knowledge of modifications of the mind (Ref - vrittisaaruupyam itaratra. Yoga 1.4). All the modifications and afflictions of nescience etc. exist in the mind only, not in the conscious Soul. When the mind becomes latent in its material cause Matter, all types of modifications and afflictions are not available for the Soul, then the Soul exists in his own form and achieves salvation (Ref - tadaa darShTu svaruupe.avasthaanam. Yoga 1.3). So, at the time of experience, all modifications and mind are cognized by the Soul, and accordingly, his tendency/movement towards virtuous-vicious acts is seen. Hence mind cannot be proved as self-illuminating by any logic and in any way.
