Component Word : ekasamaye cha ubhayaanavadhaaraNam.
Sutra in English : ekasamaye chobhayaanavadhaaraNam .20.
Meaning in English : (cha) And (ubhaya-anavadhaaraNam) both = mind and object cannot be cognized (eka-samaye) at the same time.
Ancient Seer Commentary in English : na chaikasmin kShaNe svapararuupaavadhaaraNa.m yukta.m, kShaNikavaadino yadbhavana.m saiva kriyaa tadeva cha kaarakamityabhyupagamaH.
Ancient seer Meaning in English : (cha) And (na) it is not (yuktam) possible, (ekasmin kShaNe) in one moment, (sva-para-ruupa-avadhaaraNam) to cognize its own form (= nature) and form (= nature) of an object, by the mind. (abhyupagamaH) The conception of (kShaNika-vaadinaH) advocates of momentary theory is that (yat) what is (bhavanam) creation of the mind, (saa) that creation (eva) is (kriyaa) the action, (cha) and (tat-eva) existence of that momentary mind is (kaarakam iti) is the form of subject, object, and action.
Vedic Commentary in English : In the last aphorism, it is clarified that the mind, being knowable, is not self-illuminating. But the Soul is the real knower of the subjects/objects that become available in the mind, and all the affairs of the mind are for the experience and salvation of the Soul. So, on the basis of cognizance of subjects available in the mind, the knower Soul desires his well-being and puts efforts to keep away undesired. If the mind alone is accepted, and the knower conscious Soul is not accepted, then for resulting non-accomplishment of the worldly affairs of a person, Seer Patanjali gives the second reason that at the same point of time both i.e., mind and object cannot be cognized.
This aphorism can be understood with regard to two conceptions —
1. Mind is permanent, and there is no knower of it; i.e., mind alone is self-illuminating; and
2. Mind is momentary, at every moment new mind gets generated and the previous one gets destroyed; i.e., a new mind replaces the old one.
The first view had been abrogated by Bhoja — The knowledge of any object is for further modifications/affairs. As this object is the cause of pleasure or cause of pain. In this way two things will take place i.e., (1) knowledge of pleasure-pain and according to those further affairs/modifications; and (2) knowledge of mind that "I know this object"; and these two things cannot take place at the time of cognizance of an object, since only one work is possible by the mind, at one time (Ref - Nyaaya Philosophy 1.1.16). Seer Patanjali also clearly established in aphorism 4.17 that the subject/object that colors the mind at a particular time, that alone is known to it and all other objects/subjects are unknown to it. So, at the time when the mind is colored by a particular subject/object, making the subject/object as known, then at that point of time, the second job = work e.g. — "the afterward knowledge that this subject/object is the mean of pleasure or pain for me" and resulting modification of attachment or aversion for that subject/object cannot take place simultaneously. And when such knowledge is taking place, at that point of time mind is not colored by that subject/object, and as a result subject/object is unknown to the mind. Hence at the time when the subject/object is known to the mind, it is not possible to have the manifestation of knowledge of pleasure or pain in the inanimate mind. So, it is not possible to have the knowledge of self and subjects/objects by the mind at the same time. So, the mind is not self-illuminating.
The second view of momentary theory is abrogated by Seer Vyaasa in this aphorism. He said that believers of momentary theory accept that the mind is momentary. So, it is not possible to have the knowledge of self and object by the momentary mind. Since the momentary mind gets destroyed after getting generated at a moment, and the second mind is there in the second moment and the third in the third moment, and so, on. In this way generation of mind is the only activity at a particular time; and at the time of generation of mind, it is not possible that the mind has the knowledge of another subject/object; in the next moment that mind does not exist and in order to have the knowledge of the subject in the second moment, the mind of the previous moment is not available. In order to have the knowledge of a subject/object, the process is the generation of an object at the first moment, its activity in the second moment, and that object becomes a factor by performing any act in the third moment. But these three acts of generation, activity, and becoming factor are not possible in one moment. So, there being no possibility for the momentary mind to become a factor in performing any act, it is not proper to accept the mind as self-illuminating. The momentary theory is already abrogated by Seer Vyaasa in aphorism 1.32 above.
