Vedic Commentary in English : Yogi has achieved the highest state of Egoism Cognitive Trance i.e., the Cloud-of-Virtue Trance; and the attainment of this state is that all the afflictions and virtuous-vicious acts present in his mind get ceased. Cessation of afflictions and acts takes place in sequence along with their causes.
The devotee should not understand that on achieving Cloud-of-Virtue Trance, cessation of all afflictions and acts take place at once; but their cessation takes place in sequence by the proper practice of this state of trance. In this state of having "constant discrimination" other knowledge(s) do not get manifested in the mind since previously accumulated residual potencies are already attenuated; with a result, there is a continuous flow of discriminative knowledge. By this fire of intelligence cessation of afflictions and acts take place. Afflictions of nescience etc. are the mental modifications named as the unreal cognition (Ref - seyam pa~nchaparvaa bhavati-avidyaa (Vyaasa 1.8)); and for restraint of modification of unreal cognition performance of Practice and Desirelessness is must (Ref - abhyaasavairagyaabhyaam tat-nirodhaH. Yoga 1.12). So, the proper and continuous practice of Cloud-of-Virtue Trance is a pre-requisite for achieving cessation of afflictions and acts.
Nescience is the mother of the next four afflictions (Ref - avidyaa kShetram-uttareShaam prasupta-tanu-vichchhinna-udaaraaNaam. Yoga 2.4); i.e., till the existence of nescience other afflictions exist; and on cessation of nescience, other afflictions of Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death also get destroyed. So, on account of real cognition in the mind of a yogi, first of all, the affliction of nescience gets destroyed; and after that other afflictions = defects get destroyed, and in last yogi gets relieved from acts with desire, i.e., he does not perform any act with the desire of worldly enjoyments. Seer Patanjali clarified the nature of nescience in aphorism 2.5 as - "Nescience is having knowledge of eternal in non-eternal, pure in impure, pleasure in pain, and Soul in the material world". In fact, the field of nescience is very wide; it takes place in every knowable object = subjects such as Soul, body, organs, object, mind, acts, defects, next-birth, fruits of acts, pain, and salvation. Yogi by having the cognition of all these subjects = objects, in the state of Cloud-of-virtue trance, have the knowledge of the true form of all such subjects = objects, and thereby he becomes able to destroy the nescience with its all causes i.e., in this way, nescience gets destroyed with its cause. On the destruction of nescience, the other afflictions of Egoism, Attachment, Aversion, and Fear of Death get destroyed automatically in sequence.
On destruction = removal of defects of Attachment, Aversion, and Illusion, the yogi gets relieved from acts also. Here the targeted acts for cessation are those which are performed with desire, and which are referred to as "trividham-itareShaam" in aphorism 4.7 i.e., all virtuous, vicious, and mixed-up acts which are performed by one who is not a yogi. Yogi keeps on performing non-virtuous-non-vicious acts in his present lifetime. These acts are not being based on afflictions; hence these do not become the cause of bondage (Ref - kleshamuulaH karmaashayo driShTaadriShTa-janmavedaniiyaH. Yoga 2.12)
The yogi whose afflictions and acts had ceased to exist, becomes independent = free while living his present life i.e., becomes free from bonds of life, since the cause of life-cycle is nescience = unreal cognition; and the intellectual's birth, who is not having unreal cognition, is not seen by anyone. (Ref - satsu klesheShu karmaashayo vipaakarambhii bhavati na uchchhinna-kleshamuulaH. Vyaasa on 2.13). This principle is also explained in aphorism 2.12. Other seers are also of the same opinion — "viitaraagajanma-adarshanaat" (Nyaaya Philosophy 3.1.25) i.e., the life-cycle of desireless persons is not seen.
In this context, we should understand the Vyaasa commentary on aphorism 2.26. In this aphorism, Seer Patanjali said that the means for achieving salvation is undisturbed discriminative knowledge. On this Seer Vyaasa wrote that —"sattvapuruSha-anyataa-pratyayaH viveka-khyaatiH i.e., distinct knowledge of mind and Soul is discriminative knowledge". This state has been received in a Cloud-of-Virtue Trance. Further, he said - "yadaa mithyaaGYaanam dagdha-biijabhaavam vandhya-prasavam sampadyate tadaa vidhuta-klesharajasaH sattvasya pare vaishaaradye parasyaam vashikaara-sa.nGYaayaam varttamaanasya viveka-pratyaya-pravaaho nirmalo bhavati i.e., when nescience becomes like burnt-up seeds and thus becomes incapable of fruition then the mind, not having any dirt of Quality of Disturbing Energy, have the state of the highest purity, and while existing in the state of supreme control on itself, the flow of discrimination becomes pure". Here cessation of afflictions and desirous acts is said. On removal of the affliction of nescience pure flow of discriminative knowledge continues, and discriminative knowledge without the shadow of defects of nescience, etc. is said as a means of salvation. He further said - "tato mithyaa-GYaanasya dagdhabiijabhaavopagamaH punaH cha aprasavaH. iti eShaH mokShasya maargaH. i.e., by that discriminative knowledge nescience becomes like the burnt-up seeds and it does not sprout again i.e., becomes unproductive. So, this is the path of salvation." so, even after this state, the nescience is to be brought into the burnt-up state by the discriminative knowledge so, that it should not be able to come into the working state again. And this function takes place in the Ultra-cognitive Trance only, where the Soul cognizes the Supreme Lord GOD, after which he says - "praaptam praapaNiiyam kShiiNaaH kShetavyaaH kleshaa, chhinnaH shliShTaparvaa bhava-sa.nkramaH, yasya-avichchhedaat janitvaa mriyate mritvaa cha jaayata iti (Vyaasa 1.16) i.e., whatever was obtainable has been obtained; the afflictions, that were to be destroyed, have been destroyed; the fast jointed chain of the life-cycle has been broken, which when it is not broken, the Soul takes birth in a body and then occurs death, and birth after death." Hence Seer Patanjali had prescribed cessation of the succession of changes of Qualities of Illumination etc. in aphorism 4.32 which completes during the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance only.
Query:- Can salvation not be achieved before the state of Ultra-cognitive Trance?
Solution:- No, it is not possible. While explaining seven-fold knowledge in the commentary to aphorism 2.27, Seer Vyaasa had given one of them as - "saakShaatkritam nirodha-samaadhinaa haanam i.e., salvation has become a fact of direct cognition by means of Ultra-cognitive Trance". So, even on achievement of Cloud-of-Virtue trance, the highest state of Egoism Cognitive Trance, salvation cannot be achieved.
Query:- Since the fruits of cessation of afflictions and acts, and achievement of the state of freedom from the bonds of life are achieved by Cloud-of-Virtue Trance, so, it should be accepted as Ultra-cognitive Trance which appears to be in line with the conception of scripture.
Solution:- Merely by seeing the above fruits it is not proper to accept the Cloud-of-Virtue trance as Ultra-cognitive Trance. This has already been explained in the last aphorism on the basis of internal testimony of scripture. This should also be understood as follows:-
See, nescience is the other name for unreal cognition. Seer Patanjali had given extreme importance to the destruction of nescience in the whole scripture. So, the destruction of nescience means restraint of modification of unreal cognition, and even modification of memory is not to be based on unreal cognition. It is further said in aphorism 2.12 that the vehicle of actions, having roots of unreal cognition, provides fruition in the present and future births; and till the nescience exists in its base, the accumulated vehicle of actions provides fruits of life-state, lifetime, and experience (aphorism 2.13). So, when the nescience gets removed by the proper practice of Cloud-of-Virtue Trance, then the vehicle of actions to be accumulated in the future does not have nescience as a base for it. This is known as a state of non-virtuous-non-vicious acts for the yogi. But till now all modifications other than unreal cognition have not been restrained. However, for achieving Ultra-cognitive Trance restraint of all modifications is a must. Seer Patanjali has still mentioned some knowable objects in the next aphorism, which will be cognized by way of direct perception etc.
Even in this state the previously accumulated vehicle of actions and their residual potencies are existing in the mind, and those are yet to be brought in a burnt-up state. That state cannot be achieved without Supreme Desirelessness. It should be understood that in order to achieve "constant discrimination" seeds of residual potencies of worldly affairs had already been attenuated, with the result, that knowledge other than the discriminative knowledge does not appear in the mind (Ref - Vyaasa on 4.29). And the potencies of trance-cognition will become latent along with the mind, for which no separate efforts are required to put up, hence need not be considered (Vyaasa on 4.28).
Seer Patanjali mentioned in Aphorism 2.26 that the means of salvation is undisturbed discriminative knowledge. The state of that undisturbed discriminative knowledge is Cloud-of-Virtue Trance where the discriminative knowledge does not get disturbed by the previously accumulated residual potencies of worldly affairs. By the proper practice of this, a succession of changes of Qualities of Illumination, etc. also ends, as prescribed in aphorism 4.32.
As regards the question of cessation of afflictions and acts of desire, we refer to the testimony of Brihadaaranyaka-UpaniShada, where while defining the word "Soul" it is said - "sarvaan paapmana auShat tasmaat puruShaH" (brihadaaraNkya upaniShada 1.4.1) i.e., He burns all the evils = vices, so, he is called as "Soul". As per the context of UpaniShada this definition is about the Soul only. Here in the state of Cloud-of-virtue Trance when the yogi gets the cognizance of conscious Soul, then in that state the pure Soul is capable of becoming free from the afflictions of nescience, etc. This is the fact that without the help of the Supreme Lord GOD, this position is not possible, but by knowing this capability of Soul, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had mentioned this achievement in the state of Cloud-of-Virtue Trance.
Vyaasa's commentary on aphorism 3.50 is also proving this conception, where he said that - "When the afflictions and acts are being attenuated = weakened this yogi thinks like that this discriminative knowledge is the characteristic of "Illuminative Quality", and this "Illuminative Quality" being inanimate, changeable in nature and is for the purpose of Soul, is classified as avoidable; and on the other hand Soul is unchangeable and pure in his form, is distinct from the "Illuminative Quality" of Matter. Then in this way, he becomes desireless for the discriminative knowledge also, and the seeds of afflictions are burnt-up like the seeds of rice which become incapable of sprouting again, of this yogi, those seeds of afflictions pass, along with the mind, into latency. On becoming these seeds latent, the Soul does not experience the triad of pain again".
In this way even after the removal of afflictions and acts of desire, Supreme Desirelessness from the state of superior illuminative mind is a must for the yogi, only then the authority of Qualities will end and he will be able to achieve salvation. So, removal of afflictions and acts on achieving the state of Cloud-of-virtue = the highest state of Cognitive Trance is proper and as per scriptures only.
Here the question arises is that - what happens in the Ultra-cognitive Trance? without understanding this we will be playing with the words only and remain away from facts. As per Seer Patanjali, Ultra-cognitive Trance is the state of restraint of all modifications. Seer Vyaasa said - "na tatra ki~nchit-sampraGYaayata iti-asampraGYaataH" (1.2). This had been explained in the commentary to 1.2 above, i.e., during the period of Ultra-cognitive Trance, nothing that had been cognized up to Cognitive trance got cognized. It is not possible to describe the modification-less state of mind in words. In this way, the conscious Soul, without modifications, exists in the conscious GOD. This conception had also been established in Vedanta Philosophy by Seer Vyaasa as - "chiti tanmaatreNa tadaatmakatvaat-iti-audulomiH" (Vedanta 4.4.6) i.e., when the Soul, without the defects of nescience, etc. become pure then he gets related with the form of GOD. (Swami Dayanand Saraswati, Light of Truth Chapter 11). Now after cessation of afflictions and desirous acts, the Soul becomes desireless even towards the Qualities of Illumination, etc., and even devoid of modifications of the mind, while existing in his own form, get related with the pure conscious GOD. But this state cannot be described in words, so, Seer Patanjali and Seer Vyaasa had not given any word form for it. Even after achieving it, nobody in the world can express this state in words. The experience of that period is not the subject matter of mental modification, so, this can not be known by way of perception = knowledge, nor it can be expressed in words. As nobody can make others experience the sweetness of mango merely by words, so, in the same way, cognizance of GOD is the subject matter of self-experience which cannot be expressed by way of mental modifications. For this reason, it is clearly said in the scriptures that GOD cannot be cognized by inanimate Matter and its products.
So, cessation of afflictions and desirous acts, by the regular practice of Cloud-of-Virtue Trance, is proper as per scriptures. After this, the succession of changes of Qualities ends with the achievement of Ultra-cognitive Trance.
Here one more question that needs to be discussed is that - "What is the need for cessation of afflictions of nescience, etc?" The reply to this question is that without the removal of nescience, the Soul will remain involved in the endless cycle of experience of fruits of the vehicle of actions. For this one very important reason is given in the following verse of Chhandogya-UpaniShada —
Chhandogya 8.3.2.
As one who does not know about his field and performs the acts of ploughing and sowing in the normal way, he is not able to get the hidden wealth of the field; in the same way, everybody, even going near to GOD every day, is not able to get the cognizance of GOD, as all these human beings are covered by nescience.
In fact, both GOD and Soul exist in one place, named as "dahar" = i.e., in the heart of this body. At the time of sleep the Soul, becoming devoid of worldly experiences, exists on the base of GOD, but this state is not termed as cognizance of GOD. Though the Soul exists with the GOD at that time, however, due to the dominance of Quality of Inertia, he does not know anything about GOD, and after coming back in the wake-up state, he again appears in the form of mental modifications.
